I think the best strategy to increase trust in these communities is to acknowledge the past wrongdoings and have the medical community distance themselves from the individuals responsible for those wrongdoings. I also think making efforts to educate people in these communities about the specific effects of each treatment.

I think honesty is key when it comes to any type of medical work. The best thing to do is to tell someone what exactly will happen, where the research will go, the estimated pain level if there is any and things of that nature. The problem in the past was the fact doctors were not honest with the patient. This was a reoccurring thing that led to a large group of people being lied too, leading to mistrust. Honesty will naturally give someone trust towards another.

Some strategies are to be more transparent about what is going on in the study and trying to explain the experiments as much as possible to decrease the possibility of uninformed consent. Extra care should also be taken when treating the individuals, and emotional and mental health needs should also be addressed on top of physical needs.

Ensure open communication that is accessible for all of these communities. Many of these communities face a lack of education, as well as language barriers, so it’s important that the communication is understandable. The doctor patient relationship and the bond formed could also contribute to an increase in trust.

In most situations concerning trust, actions speak louder than words. I feel this sentiment is also applicable in this situation. The scientific community should make intentional, direct efforts to be open and communicative with individuals in these communities. Establishing meetings to discuss needs/desires of the community as well as making sure any actions are consensual and in align with cultural practices could be a stepping stone.

I think one strategy to increase trust could be making access more localized to these communities and going to areas near them. Also showing evidence of the research going on and making the findings clear would help to decrease the hesitancy within the communities.

I think that the government and healthcare workers should focus on increasing easy accessibility as well as clear education on new vaccines in environments that have been historically mistreated by unethical biomedical research. I believe this would help increase trust as there would be less barriers to vaccine access as well as understanding which I believe would be the first step to building a relationship between these communities and health care officials. - Lavanya

I think it’s important to punish researchers who carried out the research, apologize and compensate to victims of unethical research, and to promote awareness of such research publicly. It is important in future research to explain in detail the process of the experiment and take into considerations any concerns others may have.

I think an important step that the healthcare system can take is transparency with regard to their own capabilities. Often the world of medical research poses things as factual when they may not be (looking at the progression of the COVID pandemic as an example, we can see how the CDC frequently changed their suggestions with regard to how the disease spread, quarantine lengths, etc). By being truthful about their inability to be entirely certain about certain things as research progresses, trust won’t be shattered as strongly when some “facts” do end up being inaccurate.
