Hello, My name is Vinh. I come from Vietnam. My country is very beautiful and peaceful. First, people greet each other very simply when meeting each other in Vietnam, just by shaking hands or just a hug. Second, when meeting each other in Vietnam, we need to greet the elderly, that is a way to respect those older than us. Third, the dining culture in Vietnam is that before a meal, we need to invite the elders to eat and here we eat with bowls, chopsticks and spoons. If during a meal you do not invite anyone or pick up food yourself, you are disrespecting everyone and here we do not encourage that. Finally, in our country, there is no taboo when giving gifts, the most meaningful gift is the heart and just a few objects or a set of clothes is very precious. That is my country. I love Vietnam very much.

However, in Vietnam, there are still some rules at the dining table. That is, we cannot watch TV or phone while eating or talk while eating, that is considered impolite. Finally, there are some taboos when giving gifts, we should not give friends sharp objects. Because sharp objects symbolize division and severance.

In formal situations, we use titles like “Mr.,” “Mrs.,” or “Miss,” followed by the person’s last name to show respect. At the dining table, it’s important not to chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice, as this symbolizes bad luck, and you should also avoid tapping chopsticks on bowls.

Hi John, I heard you're coming to Vietnam and I'll tell you about some of the culture here. First when people meet each other they will greet each other and start a small conversation as a way of greeting. In a more formal way, they may shake hands and greet each other. There are some table manners is everyone eats and talks to each other. What you shouldn't do is not use your phone too much and pay attention to people around you. After eating, you should help everyone clean up the meal. I think here, when giving gifts, people are very comfortable because when receiving gifts, everyone is happy, right? That's some culture in my place

Hello! I'm from Vietnam, people usually greet each other with a handshake when they first meet, that's a common custom. It's quite normal to introduce yourself and exchange names before starting a conversation. When addressing people formally, people often use their full names, followed by appropriate honorifics such as Mr. and Mrs. When eating, we must invite each other to eat together. It is important to wait for everyone before starting to eat. Giving gifts is a very romantic thing, but there are certain taboos that you need to keep in mind. For example, giving gifts of a sensitive nature is considered impolite. Additionally, it is important to consider the recipient's preferences and needs when choosing a gift. In general, our cultural traditions emphasize respect and care for others.

Hi Bro, I hope you are doing well! I thought it would be interesting to share a few things about Vietnamese culture with you, since it is a bit different from American customs. In Vietnam, people greet each other with a small bow or a nod, and sometimes a handshake if it’s formal. When talking to someone respectfully, we add titles like “Anh” (for older men) or “Chi” (for older women) before their names. This shows respect. At meals, it’s polite to wait until the oldest person starts eating. Also, we avoid putting chopsticks upright in a bowl because it looks like incense sticks used at funerals, which is disrespectful. When giving gifts, we prefer wrapping in red or yellow because these colors mean good luck and happiness. Black and white wrapping is avoided because these colors are for funerals. Giving gifts in pairs, like two cups or two fruits, is lucky and symbolizes balance and harmony.

I hope you enjoyed learning about these traditions! Let me know if you have any questions or want to know more about Vietnamese culture.

Best, Ngọc Minh

In our culture, it's also best to avoid wrapping gifts in black or white because of these two colors are associated with death.

I will be very happy if you come to my beautiful country.

Hi Linda. Welcom to Viet Nam. The country has a beautiful and rich traditional culinary culture and history. Here people greet each other by saying ' xin chào'. Besides, Vietnamese culture and customs play a central role in life with traditional festivals such as Tet and Trung Thu. Vietnamese culture is also renowned for its artistic heritage. Addition, it is impossible not to mention Vietnamese cuisine with attractive dishes such as the world-famous pho, delicious spring rolls and delicious sandwiches. In Vietnam, when giving gifts, people avoid giving chrysanthemums and lilies because they are often used in funerals and ceremonies to commemorate the deceased. Giving these flowers on happy occasions can be considered a bad omen and bring bad luck to the recipient. There are many interesting things in Vietnam to explore. Hope to see you one day soon.
