My name is Anna Oikonomou and I am a teacher of English to kids aged 12 to 18 at Arsakeio Secondary Schools of Thessaloniki, Greece. Sorry about the Greek in there ... To offset that and let you catch a glimpse of some hands-on learning and my teaching reality, please go above to browse through some of my 2015 projects so far.

In our school complex, there is a new fully-equipped-with-tablets classroom, which I have not used yet. I hope the course will help me familiarise myself with the challenges I am in for when I take my classes to the tablets learning space.

The need to engage and empower my Ss to survive as 21st century learners
See my Ss DELIVER their work to their peers!
Allow for my Ss' flexibility; let them follow their own lights of inquiry

Lack of familiarisation, troubleshooting inexperience, booking tablet classroom, schedule

3 What classroom challenges do I already face or do I anticipate facing when using tablets?

S distraction, slow Internet connection, S reluctance to stay on task, noise, class management and discipline issues, system crashes down

1 How do you form groups of students for group work and why do you take this approach? Based on your experience what strategies of forming groups work and which do not work? Why?

I usually assign them with the group role through an interactive BINGO game which scaffolds the characteristics and profiles of what each team/group is expected to possess through statements such as "I like .../can do .../ am excellent at .../ am keen on ...". This helps them smoothly get in the right team spirit and develop a strong sense of belonging. Plus, it helps me shape the groups covering my Ss' individual needs and preferences while also catering for the dynamics therein. Grouping Ss according to their competences seems to have worked mayhem in the past, so I have switched to detecting common interests instead.

2 How do you keep your students focused and on track during collaborative projects? How do you ensure all students contribute to the task?

I discreetly stand on the side and may at times intervene to facilitate their work or ensure that everybody is doing their bit. I regularly have each team report back to the class "general assembly" by taking turns as to who the spokesperson is, and there's always a Q & A slot after each group's debriefing.

an app called ‘Showbie’ which is like a virtual learning environment that will allow me to share personalised feedback and resources with pupils, allow pupils to upload them for me to mark etc. I don’t know that I would have been able to the work that I have done without a facility like this.
