The map is of hurricane island when it was still an active quarry town. All over the island wells had been dug much closer to houses. This reservoir, once the town was established, was probably not used for drinking water for humans. It might have been used for machinery or live stock. Surface water is much more vulnerable to contaminants such as weather and animal matter, and therefore needs a lot of treatment. Well water is safer, although mining can make it contaminated with minerals.

In the quarry, much of the machinery required water for cooling. The water could not be salt water, due to the corrosion of the metal. So reservoirs were required for granite quarrying. Because this reservoir walls were built with rounder, not machine mined rock, we think that it was built before the machines were assembled. The second, later reservoir, which is square and geometric, was built after, when the machinery was working.

The reservoir is built into a hill with a curved wall to make a cup. This position must have been purposeful. The reservoir was close to the entrance of the island, as well as at the bottom of the hill. In the spring it might have collected runoff from the melting snow. The location was also far enough from the ocean that it was safe from flooding and saltwater contamination.
