A school of sanctuary symbolises and reflects an inclusive, welcoming and safe space for ALL students their families, and our staff especially newcomers who come from international, refugee and migrant communities and other ethnic minorities.

Midleton CBS is an educational setting where students are respected cared for and encouraged to be responsible to progress in their learning and develop their innate gifts and talents. Our school strives to ensure that each student will reach their full potential in an environment which is led by the ethos of the ERST community.

Steve shared with our students, staff and invited neighbours his experiences as an astronaut on the International Space Station, his inquisitive nature and life experiences that led him to working in NASA and space. Commander Swanson is a highly accomplished individual with a remarkable career in space exploration. His achievements include space flight experience on the STS – 117 Atlantis and STS – 119 Discovery including 5 space walks. He was also in command of the International Space Station in 2014. Thank you for taking the time to speak with and inspire all those watching.

In providing this programme, we cater for the well-being of all students and ensure that they feel happy to come to Midleton C.B.S every day!

Students travelled on 2nd March to Folgaria accompanied by their teachers and thoroughly enjoyed their trip. ⛷️

The teachers left their teaching clothes behind them for one night and they took to the catwalk. While reluctant initially, their inner diva came out on the night. They were naturals.

Activity: Tuesday lunch time Art: Every Tuesday the art room is open. All students are welcome. The aim is create a welcoming quiet “sanctuary” for students who wish to do artwork as a hobby, chat, have lunch or listen to music. Some students who have ASD feel comfortable in the Art room at lunch. It encourages inclusion. 

Activity: “Action painting, a team building fun art activity”.  Create a sense of community and collaboration, included all Art students especially those with learning difficulties to participate and learn what group artwork is, what “automatism” drawing and painting is. Have fun and play through Art for all abilities and backgrounds. 

Activity: “Art and Music Christmas Party”. Students volunteered to organise a Christmas party on Tuesday lunch time before Christmas open to all. Students were asked to reflect on those less well off such as refugees, the poor and the elderly. They helped with collecting food for st Vincent de Paul. 

Activity: Animation workshops with the theme “A helping hand/ friendship”. These 4 workshops used the theme of helping others to improve an inclusive school community by highlighting link with friendship, encourage a sense of community. Students with learning difficulties the ASD students and two students who had health difficulties were invited to as many of the workshops as possible. It was suitable for all abilities. 

Activity: Signage for “Our School of Sanctuary”. Create a visible large sign “Our School of Sanctuary” on the main stair well. Encourage a sense of community and collaboration, include all students in the class to participate and learn what group artwork is, learn what a refugee is, use the creation of the sign to reflect on what it means to welcome others who are experiencing hardship. 

Activity: painting workshop to create a mural “A SAFE SANCTUARY FOR ALL”. We created a mural for a school wall (will be installed this summer) with an Italian based visiting artist leading the project. Students with learning difficulties the ASD students and four students who had health difficulties were invited to do the workshops as well as the main art classes. It was suitable for all abilities.

On Saturday 18th November, two members of our Irish committee, Seán Cullinane & Denis Power, attended a UCC training day run by Conradh na Gaeilge. This training was for Irish officers within the school and gave the lads the opportunity to speak to students from other schools and discuss how they can encourage the Irish language in our school. Seán and Denis really enjoyed the training and will bring their ideas to the Irish committee over the next few weeks.

Students had the opportunity to ask questions and learn a lot about the history and workings of the EU and its representatives. Thanks to Billy for taking the time out of his busy schedule to to be with us on Friday.

The programme was facilitated by Ms Margo Noonan, Specialist Forensic Examiner at the South Infirmary-Victoria Hospital Sexual Assault Unit. Ms. Noonan has expertise in the development and delivery of education to young people on the topic of consent, based on the issues that pertain directly to their everyday lives.

Our visitors’ itinerary included aspects that were cultural, spiritual, social justice and outreach oriented.

On the Wednesday our visitors attended the Rice Cup final and presented the trophy to our winning team.

On Thursday they toured the school, meeting students and staff and experienced first hand what it means to be a member of the cbs school community. They next toured the Homeroom and were presented with Clay Crosses which had been made by the students in the recently refurbished crafts room. Students from across the school then put on a demonstration of traditional Irish music.

After break they met and congratulated the victorious Rice Cup winning team who put on an exhibition match for the visitors before teaching them a few skills.

In the afternoon, Paul Kelly and Tracey Groome took the visitors to Ardmore and St. Declan’s Way. On the way back they stopped and explored the town of Youghal.

On the Friday they visited Cork City and took an open-top bus tour. They visited Nano Nagle Place, toured the museum there dedicated to the woman who inspired Blessed Edmund Rice in starting his educational work. Here they met the visitors based at Blarney Street CBS. No tour of Midleton or East Cork would be complete without a visit to the Distillery and the day finished with dinner at Ferrit and Lee where the groups reflected on their three days in Cork and what an Edmund Rice education looks like in Ireland compared to their home countries.

All of us in Midleton CBS were delighted to welcome these visitors and have created important links between our schools. We have already been in contact with Ignatius Park College, Australia via video message explain who we are as a school to their students. We hope to foster these relationships in the years to come. #erebb #EREBB

2nd year students participated in the inaugural SciFest@School in Midleton CBS today displaying their Science CBA work. 1st year students were invited to attend the event and had a chance to quiz them on their projects.
Many thanks to all involved, particularly the Science department for preparing the students and senior management who judged the projects and are working on totting up scores which will be announced next week.

Our Peace and Justice Group were delighted to deliver 150 shoe boxes of essential items to Cork Penny Dinners on Wednesday. Our students ran a great campaign over the last few weeks collecting boxes of essentials for the most vulnerable. Cork Penny Dinners is currently serving 1500 meals a day and is expected to deliver 3,000 food hampers to families in Cork this Christmas.

Their project examined the importance of trees in our world today and also looked at how trees can be a metaphor for society. Even if a branch breaks off it can be used to make something and some good can come from the snag. Students used their creativity to draw themselves as trees and also improved their IT skills. We also recorded and shared podcasts in German where students interviewed each other on topics relating to nature and science. This prepared them for the CBAs which is an oral component in German.

The boys' project was recognised by Leargas on an national level and the school has received a plaque showing our national quality award. Well done boys.

Congratulations to our U16 soccer team who produced a brilliant performance yesterday to win their third Cork Cork in a row.

CBS won 2 - 1 against an excellent CBC side, with Gabriel Ebo and Rian Thornhill the goal scorers.

Irish week is in full swing here in Midleton CBS . Today, we had great craic in 2nd year with students taking part in a table quiz in the school hall. We met with our next-door neighbours from St.Mary’s and there was fierce competition between the two schools!

Congratulations to the above winners. All students really enjoyed the afternoon! Well done all!

Our group also received funding from the National Green Schools organisation to shop sustainably in our local charity shops, these outfits were modelled on the day alongside our unique designs!

The chosen company Noggin Sport is a registered community interest company (C.I.C.). Their profits support charities across the UK and Ireland. So far, they have donated thousands to Mind Charity, Pieta House, Kaleidoscope Plus group, The Mental Health Foundation and Finglas Suicide Network.

Noggin Sports are continually coordinating with charities to see how they can be of service to the charities they work with. Our senior enterprise students are looking forward to helping them in their efforts to better educate young people and raise awareness around mental health. That is what Noggin is all about.
