Malala Yousafzai has dedicated her whole life to defying the Taliban and their rules in about women in society. Yousafzai was born on July the 12th 1997. [1] As a young child, her father was an advocate for education and ran a school for girls that she attended. On October 9th, 2012, a 15-year-old Yousafzai was travelling home from school, with her friends, when her school bus was stopped. A masked gunman of the Taliban boarded shot Yousafzai with a three bullets only one severally inuring her head, neck and shoulder.[2] Yousafzai survived this attack but in a critical condition, and was moved to a hospital in Birmingham that deals with military injuries.[3] This attack is one of the reasons that Yousafzai is a truly radical person. Since she recovered from this attack, Yousafzai has become an advocate, just like her father, for girls and their education around the world and says that she will continue this for some time.[4]

[1] Malala’s Story, Unknown Author, https://www.malala.org, 2017, accessed 4/4/17
[2] Malala Yousafzai, Unknown Author, https://www.nobelprize.org, 2014, accessed 4/4/17
[3] Malala’s Story, Unknown Author, https://www.malala.org, 2017, accessed 4/4/17
[4] Malala Yousafzai, Unknown Author, https://www.nobelprize.org, 2014, accessed 4/4/17

Malala Yousafzai is a truly radical person because she has enough courage to stand up for what she believes in. Yousafzai is a change agent because she wants to alter the discrimination against women and their lack of education specifically in the Middle East so that it is non-existent. She follows in the footsteps of her father to become someone who has a lot of courage to fight for what she believes in. She stated in an interview in an interview on The Daily Show in America, “I believe in equality and I believe that there is no difference between a man and a woman.” [1] Yousafzai not only believes in gender equality, but also in education rights. She wants every child in the world to have a good quality primary and secondary education. In October 2014, Malala Yousafzai was the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. In her acceptance, she stated that 66 million girls had no access to education.[2] This is a statistic that she is trying to change.

[1] Malala Yousafzai Extendend Interview, https://www.youtube.com, 2013, accessed 5/4/17
[2] Malala Yousafzai Nobel Peace Prize Speech, https://www.youtube.com, 2014, accessed 5/4/17

Yousafzai challenged the status quo that the Taliban were setting for her home country along with many others. The Taliban have created laws against basic women’s rights, that are still in place today. The Taliban banned girls and women from going to school or studying, working, leaving their home without a male chaperone of within the family, showing their skin in public, accessing healthcare by the deliverance of a man and speaking publicly about politics or any of their views. [1] These rules/laws that the Taliban created were the same for Pakistan, Yousafzai’s homeland. These rules took away, what the rest of the world sees as every girl and woman’s basic rights. Yousfzai decided that she would defy the rule about not studying or going to school as studying and learning was all she wanted to do even while receiving death threats from the Taliban.

[1] Women in Afghanistan, Unknown Author, https://www.amnesty.org.uk, 2013, accessed 7/4/17

Malala Yousafzai and her father are advocates for education throughout the world. At the very young age of 12, Yousafzai and her father was threatened to be killed, several times, by the Taliban for speaking out against their rules.[1] Once she became a target of the Taliban, she did not think it was true, but when she realised that she was in fact a target she was more worried about her father “because we thought that the Taliban are not that much cruel that they would kill a child…I was only fourteen at that time.”[2] The fact that she was more worried about her father than herself shows that she is really caring about her family and the people close to her. Yousafzai also survived a shooting that took place on her school bus on the way home from school one day. While being shot several times, only one bullet severally injured her neck, head and shoulders.[3] She survived but only in a critical condition. After 4 months in hospital and multiple surgeries, she had recovered and was able to go home to her family and home in Birmingham.

[1] Malala’s Story, Unknown Author, https://www.malala.org, 2017, accessed 7/4/17
[2] Malala Yousafzai Extendend Interview, https://www.youtube.com, 2013, accessed 5/4/17
[3] Malala’s Story, Unknown Author, https://www.malala.org, 2017, accessed 7/4/17

Yousafzai and her father have dedicated their lives to being advocates for education and for Malala, specifically girls’ education. In 2013, they co-founded The Malala Fund to “bring awareness to the social and economic impact of girls’ education and to empower girls to raise their voices.”[1] The Malala Fund is dedicated to getting the over 130 million girls that aren’t attending school, into a school and learning what we at Tatachilla Lutheran College learn every day. At the early age of 11, Yousafzai started writing blogs for the BBC under the pseudonym, Gul Makai, about living under the rule of the Taliban. With the continuous writing, Yousafzai was nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize in 2011 for all of her work in encouraging women and girls to speak up about their rights.[2] Since she was shot in October of 2012, Yousafzai has spoken at the United Nations at the age of 16, wrote an autobiography about her life called I am Malala, won the Nobel Peace Prize and has had her birthday officially named Malala Day in tribute for all of her work all while she still kept up with her normal stand up for equality and education.[3]

[1] Malala’s Story, Unknown Author, https://www.malala.org, 2017, accessed 8/4/17
[2] Malala Yousafzai, Unknown Author, http://www.biography.com, 2016, accessed 8/4/17
[3] Malala Yousafzai, Unknown Author, http://www.biography.com, 2016, accessed 8/4/17

Malala Yousafzai Changing My Worldview

Malala Yousafzai has challenged the view that I had on the world and my perception of my own life. I didn't particularly enjoy coming to school every day and there are subjects and certain events that I really dislike and it makes me dread coming to school. Yousafzai perception on the world and what she has done to enable education to a lot of people is really inspiring. Her efforts make me see that I am incredibly lucky to be able to come to school and for that education to be of a good quality. Yousafzai’s wish is for every child to have a good quality primary and secondary education and she has gone about this herself not waiting for someone else like the army or the government of her home country to do it for her and the rest of the world.[1] She also wishes for gender equality throughout the world. These are two things that are really inspiring to me for someone so young to be striving towards. Although she is a legal adult now, when she started speaking about these issues she was only around the age of 12 and this is a situation that you don't hear very often. Her life story is really inspiring to me and I hope that her wish is achieved.

[1] Malala Yousafzai Extendend Interview, https://www.youtube.com, 2013, accessed 10/4/17

Malala Yousafzai’s inspiration came from her Muslim faith and her father. The Quran talks about the Muslim faith being about humanity, peace and brotherhood.[1] As Yousafzai is a Muslim and comes from a country that heavily believes in the Muslim Faith, this is the basis for some of her inspiration. In the Islamic culture, “it is not just your right, but your responsibility to get education.”[2] This is a quote from Yousafzai about her view on the religion. Part of Yousafzai’s inspiration is from her father. Her father is an advocate for education and they share some of the same views on the world. These are the two of the many people or things that inspire Yousfzai to continue her work in gender equality and educational rights.

[1] Malala Yousafzai Quotes About Islam, Unknown Author, http://www.azquotes.com, undated, accessed 11/4/17
[2] Malala Yousafzai Quotes About Islam, Unknown Author, http://www.azquotes.com, undated, accessed 11/4/17
