Reflective Statement

In the end, I chose my performance song to be an original song by me and my band called ‘Illusions’. I wrote the bass for this song and it took quite a while for me and my band to write this song as it just never sounded like it was good enough. We were going through a major writer's block for a long while with this song. It was re-written many times and it just never worked for us but once we managed to write this song we ended up writing a whole EP after it so this song was a massive breakthrough for us as a band. For a while I was stuck between doing this song or Abigail by Motionless In White as I wanted to really challenge myself since it is a decently hard song to play. The reason I didn’t end up choosing Abigail by Motionless In White is because when it got very close to the final performance day I still was not fully comfortable playing this song and did not want to risk losing marks so I decided to stick with Illusions as it is still a little complicated on the bass so I can show my skills in techniques from that and because I am more comfortable playing this song I can focus more on my stage presence which is why I chose Illusions. When I did the performance recording, I felt so much more confident on stage than I did at the start of the term which tells me that my stage presence is improving and I can also see on the recording that even though there were not many movements made by me due to limited space on stage, my presence is still so much better just because I was so confident on stage. I managed to make my movements interesting anyway even when the stage was full by walking forwards and backwards and headbanging. I have always struggled with my stage presence and confidence on stage. I used to do minimal movements on stage and still think I did too much and looked silly. But now, I will always find a way to move around somehow and show the crowd how much I am enjoying myself. My playing skills on my bass have also really improved in my opinion because before I wouldn’t have been able to play something like Abigail by Motionless in White with confidence. I also improvised a good few of the songs we did weekly. What I would do is listen to the song and if I believed I could improvise it on the day we practice at hybrid I would do that and only learn the structure of the song. I am still not very good at improvising but I am definitely so much better at it now than I was at the beginning of the term. I am also a lot more knowledgeable on my career choices and how I want to plan out my future thanks to the ‘ Your Strategy’ assignment. All the research I did has really stuck with me because I have learnt about the realities of working in the music industry and how hard it is to make enough money so now because of this I can really plan ahead to make sure that I can make a good career for myself and live comfortably from the money I will make. Throughout this term. One of my main goals was to finish and release an EP with my band. We have been writing and working on this EP for a little over a year now so we finally decided it was time to release them. aWe recorded them all at college before and released them on soundcloud as part of our assignment at college but the mix was really bad and everything was out of tune and time. Because of this, we really wanted to re-record absolutely everything and get someone professional to mix it. We had planned everything out and we also wanted to make all of our socials better and we decided that the best way to do this was to be super active and post all the time as much as possible. I had made a few advert types of videos for the release of our EP and I reckon it could count as me practicing for the future as I want to perform full time, release music and also do digital marketing. From doing this I learnt how promoting on social media works, we started posting on tiktok nearly everyday and gained more followers just from doing that. We also posted on Instagram and gained 5 new followers which is pretty massive to us because we have not received many new followers from people finding our page themselves. I wrote at the beginning of the term that my goal was to re-record and release the EP before the term ends and we have managed to re-record everything that we needed to record including some extra parts we thought could make the songs better but unfortunately we did not manage to release it in time. This was because our old guitarist wrote the songs with us and wanted to record his parts instead of our new guitarist doing it so we are still waiting for him to send us his recording to be able to send it to our producer. What I would do differently to overcome this is ask at an earlier time so that he would have more notice which would help him with his time management since he is very busy with work and University.
