I am looking forward to the excuse to try some new things that I have been learning in my own classroom.  I have always considered myself a very non-traditional, progressive teacher in the classroom.  Sometimes you can go to a professional development, attend a webinar, or see something on a blog, and think wow, that’s a great idea.  But you never are forced to give it a shot.  I’m looking forward to using some material from my most recent professional development day, Kagan Cooperative Learning.  In my mini-lessons, I hope to incorporate some of the structures from this training, practice my delivery of them, and see how students respond.

My biggest concern is that this course involves me video taping myself.  I have done this in my classroom previously, when I flipped a class, but this experience is never fun.  I understand that it is a valid tool for self reflection, but there is nothing more humbling than seeing yourself on camera.  It is especially true when you are trying something out of your comfort zone and being graded upon your performance.  (The second biggest concern is that I am transitioning into the third quarter of school at work.  One of my co-teachers is on maternity leave this March and that puts strain on the whole department.  I will be doing all the events for science club as well as spending my prep period in her room to help out the long term sub.)  

My two personal learning goals for EDUC 580 are: 
1) Move towards more cooperative learning classroom than a teamwork project based classroom. 
 2) Learn tools to customize courses that I co-teach with other teachers; to make each class I teach more ME. 

The best educational experience I ever had was in high school, but I couldn't narrow it down to a favorite lesson.  It was a favorite teacher.  I remember being respected, valued, and encouraged.  It was a level of comfort that was established, and the ability to drill deeper into the topics that interested me.  That to me is the common thread of a good lesson.  The classroom foundations must be set to support students to engage in what they enjoy, delve deeper into areas that pique their interests, and the opportunity to take learning chances.  Good design has strong classroom management seamlessly built in so that students are engaged in learning, not class rules.
