The author is mentioned in Looking for Alaska because she represents Alaska‘s political stands by being feminist and very tolerant for unconventional ways of life. She probably is a hero for Alaska.

This poem pretty much describes Alaskas mental condition. She is depressed and hopeless too, flees that in unpredictable, emotional and rebellious reactions. Probably her depression evolved similarly as the described one, with the difference that Alaska had one traumatic event in her life while the poem describes and accumulation of many small sad moments. Her mental condition is also not repairable and she doesn‘t manage to live with the death of her mother. Her happiness could never be complete anymore and culminates in a tragical event.
