We use simple past when we want to say something that already happened. For example:
I ran 5 kilometers yesterday.
Did you visit Paris last year??
Where did you sleep last night?
Was he bored with the meeting?

In the case of the verb "be" we just do the following:
am/is >>> was
are >>> were

Now we are going to talk about regular verbs. We take a base form verb and the next step is just adding -ed at the end of it. For example:
Kill >>>Killed
Stop >>>Stopped
Play >>> Played

However, there are some spelling rules in order to form regular verbs. Those are the following:

Add -d when the verb ends in -e.

                                      Eg: escape>> escaped

Add -ed when the verb ends in a vowel+ consonant, or a vowel + -y.

                                      Eg: plan >>> planned
Eg: enjoy >>> enjoyed

Add -ied when the verb ends in a consonant+ y. Take off the -y and add the -ied ending.

                                      Eg: carry >>> carried

Besides spelling rules, there are pronunciation rules as well. Let's watch the video which explain all them.
