All too often a company gets "profit vision". From management and up, numbers become laser focused and people are put on the back burner, so to speak. What many have learned over the years is, while making profits is the goal, treating the employees with respect and as a person, brings a lot of value to the table, in effect helping profits grow.

Without the right workings in the right positions, effective work is almost impossible.

Learning about laws such as the drug free work act, Americans with disabilities act, retirement, and all the laws on equality and discrimination goes a long way in both ways. What do I mean? Not only is it good for management to be educated and probably should store a small library on them in an office, it is also beneficial for employees to know their rights. This helps both parties with checks and balances, preventing all kinds of headaches.

Rule #1. Do not go out of your way to aggravate the HR depot. You should always feel free to talk to your HR department. Just keep in mind these people have an intimate understanding of the clock ticks so don't go grinding any gears. In a heated moment, people can say things in front of people they wish they had not. If you have a discrepancy do not take it out on the people you want help from because your own words can and will be used against you.

Sexual harassment can land anyone in trouble quick, fast, and in a hurry. In some cases even ruin entire companies. Much like enriched uranium, these cases can blow wide open and sometimes without warning. From offering favoritism, to relationships gone bad, to cat calling. It is all very inappropriate that has no place in the workplace. Sexual harassment is also a double whammy because in many cases it could also be seen as discrimination.

Ensuring you have taken all necessary measures before terminating someone is crucial. If you fire someone on the spot out of emotions it looks bad upon you and the position you hold in addition to belittling the person you're firing. Also it is important to consider the employees position on discrepancies. They may be valuable. Finally, it is going to cost time and money to hire train and fill that position so just be sure that firing someone is the last option.

Not an actual topic discussed, but when you break it all down it is prevalent. When spending years in a department with people moving around positions, salaries, bonuses, etc. You're actions can come back to haunt you, or help you. Even if it was something that happened years ago in another department. People can sometimes forgive, but it is much harder to forget. Treat your coworkers how you would like to be treated or better. Respect the work your managers do and remember that the grass is always greener on the other side. .

It was a popular assumption in years past that when you move up the ladder, you become more and more authoritative. In todays world, people work better when they feel they are backed by their boss. When managers are putting their employees first and giving them the tools they need to better do their job the department as a whole does better.
