I think the group would act this way because Salva's uncle is not there with him. The group was frightened when Uncle joined the group because he was from the army and had a gun. That's why the group gave Salva and Uncle food. Now, that Salva's uncle is gone they group thought that Salva was a young boy that would complain and slow them down.
