Rev. Hale- pressures of society. Emilia and Maggie

" Mr. Hale ! Oh! it's good to see you again!" (34). Reverend Hale is a very admired and respected man in Salem. Of course he would want to keep a good image of himself and therefore he's pressured to agree with the society about witches and witchcraft. It is clear later on he has some doubts but can't go against the law.

"We must all love each other now, Goody Proctor" (53). Obviously if everyone is going on about witchcraft and witches Rev. Hale feels the need to agree with them. He believes in God and that witches exist but he has some doubts in if the girls are truly bewitched or not. Even if he disagreed with the people of Salem he'd get hated on and that respect people in the village have for him will change.

"Now look you, child, your punishment will come in its time. But if you trafficked with spirits in the forest I must know it now, for surely my enemies will, and they will ruin me with it" (10). Rev. Parris isn't very worried about Abagails actions, he's worried about his own reputation and what it will do to him if it gets out that Abagail was dancing in the forest. The pressures of society forces him to keep up a good reputation.

"How can it be the Devil? Why would he choose my house to strike? We have all manner of licentious people in the village!" (39). Reverend Parris is trying to keep up his reputation by saying that the Devil shouldn't choose him because he's good and has done nothing wrong and there are so many others in the village who are bad.

Grace & Olivia

"You did, you did! You drank a charm to kill John Proctor's wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor!" (18) She is feeling pressured by society that she cannot be with John Proctor because of the society's rule about not getting a divorce so she feels the need to put a spell on John Proctor's wife to die so she can be with him.

"The girl, the Williams girl, Abigail Williams, sir. She sat to dinner in Reverend Paris's house tonight, and without word nor warnin' she falls to the floor. Like a struck beast, he says, and screamed a scream that a bull would weep to hear. And he goes to save her, and, stuck two inches un the flesh of her belly, he draw a needle out. And demanding' of her how she come to be so stabber, she- testify it were your wife's familiar spirit pushed it in." (71) She is feeling pressured by society because the court is pressuring her to show proof about John Proctor's wife and so she feels pressured to show proof and stabs herself to get proof.

Noel Aponte
Brooklyn Borum

"You think it God's work you should never lose a child, nor grandchild either, and I bury all but one" (26.) In Puritan Society, the women are expected to be amazing mothers to their Christian children, but a total of seven of her children have died, and the only living one is on the verge of dying. This drives her to become crazy and act irrationally.

"I sent my child--she should learn from Tituba who murdered her sisters" (36). Mrs. Putnam felt so pressured to be the perfect housewife and mother that she sent her only living child to conjure spirits and talk to the Devil about who "killed" her unborn children. She wants to fit in with the other women that she was willing to risk her only daughters life to find out why she's not able to have children.

Kaylee, Makaila, & Diego

"Abby, you'll put it out of mind. I'll not be coming' for you more"(21). Since John is married, it is improper for him to have a mistress. In order to live up to the standards of society he must remain faithful and true to his wife. Religion is important to their society, so he must also remain true to his faith in god, but he broke one of the Ten Commandments.

Hale - " 'Twenty-six time in seventeen month, sir. I must call that rare. Will you tell me why you are so absent?' "(61). Religion is important to their society and he is looked down upon for not going. In order to live up the expectations he must go to church every Sunday or also known as Sabbath Day.

Brenna Ernst and Kassie Long

"I am a good woman, I know it; and if you believe I may do only good work in the world, and yet be secretly bound to Satan, then I must tell you, sir, I do not believe it" (Pg. 66)

Context: Hale arrives and "Accuses" them of witchcraft very subtly and starts to become suspicious of them

This quote interests me because instead of being angered by the fact that she could possibly be hanged and killed, she instead is angry that hale thinks of her as "Evil" and "Impure" which shows how highly she cares of her self worth and how much society has pressured her to uphold a respectable image

"You'll speak nothing of Elizabeth!!!!!" (PG. 22)

Context: proctor is the one stating this quote and Abigail originally approaches him attempting to seduce him and fails, she then resorts to making fun of Elizabeth calling her a "Sickly Wife"

This shows how one small mistake or even having one person who says anything bad about you in this society will destroy your reputation, and especially so when Abigail essentially becomes power hungry later in the story. which leads to Elizabeth being taken away, since Abigail charged her and she has a "Better Reputation" then she does.

Alex.T
