Gender Literacy Practices by Jenessa Zack

In our Reading Units we have been discussing how families from different cultures and countries are the same as we are. Throughout this Unit we are going to be discussing how not matter how different we may be or where we come from we can always find something in common. The sources proved can help students understand how they feel no matter what the situation. This Unit can also help build a strong classroom community among students and the teacher.

Picture Book by Todd Parr I would start this unit with reading this book about being different. After students listen to this book we would discuss the differences that we noticed in the book and how we as a class related to the characters in the book. After we would play the category game by what students are wearing or what they have or do at home. We would finish up the lesson by discussing the word diversity. What we think it means and how the book describes what it means. We will also discuss how we are similar to each and the text. (Goals: 1,2,3,4)

Book Talk Picture Book by by Shane Derolf and Michael Letzig
I would first instruct students to color with one single color on a sheet of paper provided to them. (both crayon and paper) I would then instruct the students to color on another sheet of paper using as many of their crayons as they could. After both drawings were done I would base the lesson off of the following questions "What a boring world it would be if we were all alike — like the picture drawn with only one crayon. The diversity in the world makes it like a wonderful box of crayons with endless colors." We would discuss why they picked the picture that they did and why.

After, I would play the Book Talk for the students. We would discusses why the crayons didn't like each other and how silly it was because they didn't know each other. We would then discuss how they got along at the end and what each crayon is used for when it comes out of the box. (Goals: 2,3,4)

After we do this students will watch the video. After watching, discuss how the star bellies treated the plain bellies. Discuss what lessons Sylvester McMonkey McBean was trying to teach the Sneeches. After questions are discussed. The students will be instructed to act out the book while the teacher reads it. At the end of the lesson, the teacher help have students explain the knowledge of diversity and stereotyping through what they learned from reading/listening/acting out the story.
(Goals: 1,2,3,4)

Why I Picked the Unit

Diversity is one of the biggest lessons students need to learn and understand when working with other students in their class. My students all come from different backgrounds and different Social Economic Classes. Some students need more help then others or have less things then others. Getting students involved and understand why we are the way we are and how we can relate to each other no matter the differences that we have is an important lesson all children need to learn. Through this Unit students and grow to understand that no matter who we are, we are equal. This unit will be especially great for my inclusion classroom this year. This will teach my students that aren't in the special education system to understand the difficulties that the other students face.
