I assign each student a number. If their phone is not in the assigned pocket by the time the bell rings, they get a detention. After doing this twice, word gets out and I haven't had a problem since.

I began the year with an option for "no phone today" as some of my students genuinely didn't have one on them. However, I now have the problem that almost EVERYONE is putting in a no phone slip, and I am confiscating up to 5 phones a day. I am also struggling with my consistency as I do have some students who respectfully ask to use their phone for translation purposes on some assignments and use it responsibly. I want to do a reset at the start of our next unit (this friday), but I am not sure how hard to come down/what strategies will help prevent the bigger issue while still honoring those who use the phone as a helpful tool.

I use phones as an attendance tracker -- some students put a slip in the phone pocket that shows they understand what it means and its consequences if I see them with a phone (1 - warning; 2 - phone call home). I mentioned at the beginning of the year that I could call home and confirm with their guardians that they don't have a phone but haven't actually needed to do so since I mentioned that. So far it's been going well!

You LEGALLY must mark a student present if they are in your room EVEN IF they do not put their phone in the pocket.

I post their numbers (white sheet) by the phone pockets. I put out chargers (which I paid for). Then, for the first 2 weeks, I consistently pretended like I was taking attendance based on the phones and called out names (__, I see you but not your phone. Let's get it in there). If I see a student with a phone who forgot, it's fine. I'll remind them. If they lied to me and used a no phone slip, they get a detention. At this point, a month in, if I don't see it, it's not a problem. If I see it, I take it and put it in the pocket for the student - unless they lied. I've only had one student fight me on it this year and I called home immediately + detention. No problems since. Let me know if you have questions! -Susie Choe

It requires a lot more time to take out/set up, but you could consider having the students who want translation help using Chromebooks instead. Then, you can monitor CB use with Relay (https://classroom.relay.school/). You can run it on Block mode and only allow the translation site of your choice. Let me know if you'd like help setting this up! - Susie

A couple of things I've found helpful in using the phones charts:

1) Warn students a day or two ahead of time that it's going to happen. Prepare them.

2) Share your rationale for doing it. There are studies that show that students do better when their phones are not in their possession. I don't know what these studies are, but I tell students that and so far they haven't challenged me.

3) I provide an array of chargers for students to use (yes, I bought them with my own money and didn't get reimbursed). It makes it seem like I'm doing them a favor - kind of.

4) At the beginning of class, I remind students to put their phones away and give them a "last chance" to do it before I call them out.

5) After that, I stand at the chart and check whose phone is missing. Sometimes the student is absent, sometimes they "forgot" or whatever, but I publicly call them out for not putting their phone away (I did warn them, after all).

6) If I catch a kid lying to me, we have a conversation about lying and integrity, and how they broke my trust and I won't be willing to trust them in the future. I try to emphasize the importance of a relationship and how it is now broken.

-Arminda

I have a google form & QR code. Kids sign in and put their seat # (which correlates to their pocket #).
Rules are: Must be signed in BEFORE class starts, and remain in chart until end of class.

(If you keep your phone- but are off task & I deliver a paper gift bag to your desk. (Optional dad joke: "I am not punishing you; I'm giving you a present: the gift of presence." Yeah- they HATE it, but it works) No extra credit for this consequence & phone stays in the bag on your desk until after class.

I made a generic rubric in Canvas, so once a week I check off days that kids get extra credit. (It is a *minimal* amount of credit, but they love it.) Plus- this is a GREAT response to the "what can I do for extra credit?" question!
