Arthur Miller wrote "The Crucible" about Salem witch trials as a comparison to McCarthy's "witch hunt" for communists.
He was subpoenaed by the HUAC and would not disclose the names of his close friends. Miller was fined, arrested, and blacklisted.

Dashiell Hammett had faced trouble with the law when his communist associates led him to a six month jail term. Then the IRS had pursued him for one hundred thousand in back taxes and garnished any future earnings. 

In 1953 Dashiell Hammett had appeared in front of court to testify his beliefs on communism. Hammett had posted bail for a group of communists on trial for conspiracy. When he skipped the bail he was jailed and blacklisted.

Notable works include West Side Story, Chichester Psalms and, On The Town. 

Bernstein had associated with many groups including The Civil Rights congress and the southern negro youth congress. Bernstein had made it out of McCarthys trials but he was still on watch. His passport was revoked in 1953, and his music was banned overseas.

Paul Robeson had a huge following he spoke out against racial injustice and was involved in politics. He had became involved in Russia by spending time there and studying their culture. His position USSR was unknown, Roberson had been tried of McCarthyism. Roberson was labeled a communist by the speech he had done at the USSR. He was blacklisted from domestic concert venues, recording labels and film studios.
