The writer does this by making her say her teacher (who she adores, but most people hate.) give the class homework to write an essay on her family's showcasable traits and appalling traits. Her family lives in Gary, India. It takes place in 1936. The writer writes from Deza's point of view. So DEZA in her essay loosely says that her dad has a hard time finding a job and her mother is a servant. She explains how her family does not have much money so on her birthday when her mom bought her a cupcake it was a big deal. Jimmy (her brother) had the impression that their mother would buy desert so when he asked for desert the next day she looked stunned and confused. Somethings involving the setting stays the same but others didn't. For example,  Bud said that most of his friends just had paper bags. He was the only one with a suit case. However nowadays almost every family has one at least. I also think that kids today have a better education. Because in the book Bud lost his first tooth when he was 6 and he thought that it was unnatural and he thought that maybe his other body parts would fall off too. Also Bud said that there was a great place to have shadow puppets and he made his hand a dog and a wolf then after that he said everything else was pretty boring.
