EARLY CALIPHS
1. All of the rulers kept the empire expanding, however the treat to Islam was not a lack of power it was a lack of control in their own government as  often seen in falling or fallen world powers.
2.Only one ruler, Abu Baker, noticed and addressed the growing problems of the internal rebellion that was constantly forming throughout the creation of the empire. The next man who attempted to stop the rebellion didn't start until the rebellion had gained to much momentum to be stopped.
MUHAMMAD'S RETURN TO MAKKAD AND HIS DEATH
  1. when Muhammad returned, he was a strong military leader as well as a religious leader.
2. After he was killed there was a power vacuum followed by a struggle for power.
THE SPLIT IN ISLAM 
1.The empire split when rulers began showing favorism to Islamic residents.
