Born in 1939, he was self-taught in photography. He studied art with his father O. Don Peris who is also a well-known landscape and portrait artist in Johor. O. Don Peris was the Royal Artist for Johor in the 1920s. 

Eric Peris was a photojournalist wih New Straits Times for 24 year. Photo Editor of the New Straits Times from 1991 till retirement in 1994. Ran a monthly photographic outing programme (1987-­1989). The NST/Kodak Photographic Outing. He was the photographic consultant and photo co­ordinator for the Trans Borneo Expeditions, 1988, 1989 and 1990.
 Co­chairman of the yearly National Productivity Photographic Contest, National and Asean level. (1986 -1991). Photographic co­ordinator and Director of the Confederation of Asean Journalists from 1984 – 1986.
