Health to me means exposing your body, mind and soul to all things positive for you. Whether that means eating soul foods and actively exercising to keep your internal and external body healthy, reading books or getting fresh air to keep your mind clear or doing things spiritually such as praying, manifesting or practising a religion to keep your soul clean and content. Health to me means looking after my self in every way I can so that I feel good, look good and am good.

In Islam, we follow the practicing of Prophet Muhammad SAW. We call his practicing 'Sunnah'. Muslims pray 5 times a day. When I pray I feel a sense of comfort it's almost like our way of mediating. Islam has helped heal me in more ways than one with my mental health. I use to excessively worry and be anxious however since becoming a practicing Muslim, I no longer worry or feel anxious about things as we are taught in Islam to put our trust in Allah (God) as he is the best of planners. If I do not succeed in something I wish to then I know it is not written for me and Allah has something better for me.

I married my Husband Aziz in August 2023 who is an Australian Lebanese. I have always only ever known my Australian culture and foods but since knowing my husband I have been introduced to his Arab culture. Arab and Australian culture is very different to each other, with language, food, beliefs, music and much more. As my husband is also Muslim we spend Eid together with his family after the month of Ramadan and spend Christmas together with my family however as I don't celebrate Christmas anymore it is still a lovely time to be with the family.

For me the most important aspects of competency standards 12.3 were effective communication. I have improved my knowledge of the reasoning behind ‘effective communication when providing culturally responsive care to people from migrant and refugee backgrounds’ and truly see the importance of this skill. Having discussed domain 7 and effective communication I now realise that it is an essential practice that I must use consistently to provide culturally safe and responsive care. This skill is very important to me in the workplace because it ensures I am helping to understand patients needs wants and beliefs whilst providing safe care to my patients from all backgrounds and beliefs.

Guide for clinicians working with interpreters in healthcare settings.
Principle health issues refugees may present with upon immigrating to Australia.

Lebanon is a country in the Middle East and in the mid 1970s to 1900, 30 000 civil war refugees migrated to Australia with majority being Muslim Lebanese for a better life ((1970s Lebanese Commission led to an immigration debacle). The Lebanese civil war resulted from tensions among Lebanons Christian and Muslim populations ((Lebanese Civil War Summary).

Some of the health concerns Lebanese people may present with upon arrival are mental health issues due to separation from their families (Chimoriya et al., 2023), post traumatic stress disorder and anxiety from life events that they have experience during wars and events that have occurred before immigrating to Australia. A treatment option for refugees and migrants suffering mental health issues would be counselling and speaking to a psychologist or psychiatrist to explore different options such as therapy or medication to help better their mental health(Department of Health & Human Services, 2000).

Cardiovascular disease is one of the highest health concerns for middle eastern immigrants due to cardio metabolic risk factors as well as poor lifestyle behaviours (Saeed et al., 2020). Treatment options for cardiovascular disease will be medication to help ease symptoms and also cardiac rehabilitation with exercise.

Immunisation is a health concern as refugee-like backgrounds, such as the Middle East, are at risk of being unimmunised or under-immunised on arrival in Australia due to their refugee and forced migration experience (Immunisation). A treatment option for unimmunised immigrants would be to have pre arrival immunisations available for those in need.

References

1970s Lebanese Commission led to an immigration debacle.

Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims where we fast from sunrise to sunset everyday during the month. It is an act of worship and faith, it also is to teach us to be grateful for what we have as some people do not have the luxury of food and water. At sunset muslims get together for Iftar (a meal to break your fast on).

My mum immigrated to Australia when she was 8 years old with her 3 siblings and mother. My mum and her siblings stayed at Fairbridge Farm in Pinjarra as my nanna was poor and made the move to Australia with her 4 small children all alone for a better life. When I was 5 years old my family and I lived in Karratha WA for two years as my dad worked there. My dad has been a FIFO worker all my life and is now working as a super intendant for rigging and scaffolding in Puapa New Guinea. My dad being catholic and mum Church of England, they both accepted my conversion to Islam and are so proud of me and the change it has bring me as a person. My mum has currently been learning about Islam herself but my dad is content with his faith as a Catholic.
