QR codes are kind of like barcodes but were specifically designed to be used by cell phones. QR is a trademark name for a 2-dimensional barcode system, and 
are much more useful than standard one-dimensional barcodes. They can store 100 times more data than a barcode. And you don't need a special scanner to use them - just an app that you download onto your phone.

QR codes are generally used to open URL links, but can also open geo coordinates, and text pages. They are to give you instant access to more information online rather than providing a web address that you have to type in manually.

Even though they were much more popular several years ago than they are today, QR codes are still immensely useful. The blocks of small black and white squares is read by the app's image sensor and interpreted using the system processor. Part of the image acts as an alignment target while another normalizes the angle and size of the screenshot. The image also contains formatting information and data that is converted into binary code which is checked for errors  This encoded data can be interpreted in a number of modes.
