Influenza Type A Virus

Influenza A viruses are divided into sub-types because of two proteins: hemagglutinin(HA) and neuraminidase (NA). 

There are 18 known types HA subtypes and 11 known types NA subtypes.

This disease will present symptoms such as: chills, fever, sore throat,fever,  muscle aches, and headaches.

GI issues can occur like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Symptoms of respiratory illnesses can occur like pneumonia, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and etc.

This disease can also cause mild and severe conjunctivitis.

Possible neurological changes can occur also such as seizures and altered mental status.

One way to prevent from getting the Bird Flu is good hand hygiene.

Individuals who work with poultry or birds for a living need to ensure that they are wearing proper PPE whenever they are at work.

Avoid all types of body fluids coming from birds such as: mucous, saliva, and feces.

Seasonal vaccines will not prevent you from getting  this disease, however it will lower the risk.

People who get the disease most be monitored and reported to the CDC.

Birds, poultry, or humans can contract this virus. This virus can not be transmitted from human to human; only from bird or poultry to human. People who work with poultry or birds for a living are highly susceptible to this disease. If contracted by a human being this disease can be very deadly.  Bird flu is seen a lot in the Asian culture

Domestic poultry (like chickens and turkeys) are especially vulnerable to avian flu outbreaks and are the least likely to recover from the disease

The virus can survive for three months in bird droppings; the virus can also survive in water for up to four days.

There is no vaccine yet available for the H5N1 virus, but several companies in the U.S. and Europe are racing to develop one.

Experts fear that if the H5N1 virus mutates to a form that does pass from human to human, it could set off an international pandemic.

The deadly strain of influenza virus currently found in Southeast Asia is known as the H5N1 strain. It can pass from birds to humans, but cannot yet pass from human to human.
