Educational Context: Further Education

Target Learners: Further Education students taking the level 5 module: Communications (5N0690), studying for the Level 5 Education and Training Award (5M3635), for one year.

Learner Design Approach: ABC Learning Design

Class Length and Setting: 60-90 minute class broken up into engaging activities, videos, and reflections.

Class Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this class, students will be able to:

• Demonstrate communication styles and techniques.

Begin by asking what the students think communication is. Followed by their explanation and reason behind their thinking.

Students will then be asked to recall a time when they have observed bad communication.

Furthermore, students will be asked why the communication was bad and asked to brainstorm ways of avoiding this in the future using Canva. Students will upload their Canva to the Google Classroom space

Present the PowerPoint presentation on the topic to the class on a Pre recorded video.

Timing: 30 minutes

Resources: Powerpoint Presentation and Canva for brainstorming.

Students will explore how to interpret verbal communication through listening.

Students will watch a Ted Talk YouTube video.

(On Google Classroom)

Students will then be asked to identify what emotion is being portrayed through the video based on the tone of the speaker's voice.

This will enable students to identify emotion through tone.

Students will be asked what the main point or argument being made was in the clip.

Post-listening, students will be asked what phrases or sections of the audio stood out to them and why.

Answers to questions will be answered through a Google Forms available on Google Classroom

Timing: 15 minutes

In groups, students will conduct online research to discover 4 different ways of communicating.

Students will identify the strengths and weaknesses of these ways of communicating.

Furthermore, students will use Padlet and post to Google Classroom to display their findings.

Timing: 10 minutes

Students will research and follow the mindmap and brainstorm examples given by the teacher on Canva for guidance.

Students will then conduct and create their own mindmaps and brainstorms on Padlet and submit them to Google Classroom.

Timing: 10 minutes

Timing: 5-10 minutes

Resources: 10 question Kahoot Quiz

• Make the Google Slides and video recording for Activity 1.

• Create a link to Padlet for the Investigation Activity.

• Create a Kahoot quiz for the assessment.

• Create a YouTube video on barriers to Communication.
