The district measuring 840 sq kilometres in size and it is the fifth largest district in the state. It has a blend of urban and rural residences with a more significant part of the populace settling in towns close to Kuala Lumpur.

According to an old folks’ tale, Hulu Langat is named after an insect known as ‘Langat’ that was said to infest the district before it was opened as villages and towns in the area. Alternatively, the name may come from the name of a fish, Selangat, which lives both in saltwater and freshwater.

Hulu means deep within or upstream and based on the location of the region in the heart of Selangor, it became popular as Hulu Langat.

Kajang station which is the southern terminal of the MRT SBK line, is also an interchange with the KTM Komuter Seremban Line.

Highways
The constituency is served by the Kuala Lumpur–Seremban Expressway, the Cheras–Kajang Expressway and the Kajang Dispersal Link Expressway (Silk Highway) with essential links to other major highways.

The most popular agricultural product hailing from the district is lemongrass or known as ‘Serai’ in Bahasa Malaysia. Formerly growing rice here in Hulu Langat, but farmers have shifted to lemongrass due to the drainage system in the area. Their daily yields, which reach up to five tonnes, are snapped up by wholesale markets, factories and restaurants in the Klang Valley, as well as in Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and even as far as Johor.

•A crowd of locals are there, especially on holidays for picnic, swimming, bathing or just enjoying, as it is suitable for families.

•A cemented path leads from the parking to the lower falls. Along the path several shelters have been built.

•A place surrounded  by nature which can camping, picnic, BBQ.  There are chalets and campsite are available for visitor to stay overnight.

•It’s a adventurous place for hiking. Providing huts and tent renting which is prefect for family picnics.

•Lepoh Waterfalls are particularly known for its natural ‘slide’, which is a large, flat and extremely smooth rock formation that visitors often use to glide into a small lagoon near the bottom.

•Plastic chairs are placed in the pool for you to sit and soak your legs if you find it too hot to dip your full body into the water. 

•The sources of the water can be identified by bubbles floating up from the bottom and these areas should be avoided as they can scald you.

The forest park offers a good opportunity for birdwatching and nature photography. Activities to do at Sungai Tekala forest park is family picnic, camping and jungle trekking.

The land was swampy so the road from Bandar Langat to Hulu Langat village was not constructed till early 20^th century, when the advent of rubber had created both a need and the resources for it.

In 1880s:

Roads linking Hulu Langat, Kuala Lumpur and Seremban were built.

River for exporting tin.

Orang Asli (Sakai) had lived in Langat valley long before Malays arrived, could speak malay fluently, absorption into the Malay community was well advanced but retained their traditional headmen (Batin, Jenang,…). Orang Buket & Orang Tanjong. No religion nor worship.

·          It has a mix of urban and rural settlements with a majority of the population settling in towns near Kuala Lumpur, such as Cheras and Ampang.

·         Hulu Langat has a median income of RM4060(2016), which is significantly lower than the state average of RM7225(2016). This district also has a higher poverty rate compared to the state and national average as of 2016. 

·         In the 1960s, a campaign that encouraged locals to plant limes was initiated. To transport farming equipment, a laterite road was built. During its construction, they found the waterfall. The district became popular as a tourist destination with the discovery of the waterfall.

·         Access was further improved when the Kajang Municipal Council built cemented paths and a series of steps leading to the upper part of the falls more than 20 years ago.

·         Gabai River was the first to become popular. Then the other two recreational forests in Sungai Tekala and Sungai Congkak, which were also popular with tourists.

·         Negri Sembilan Forestry Department forest ranger Fairul Aswan said the Jalan Sungai Lalang area was famed for tin mining in the 1970s and 1980s.

·         When operations ceased, the area was gazetted a virgin jungle reserve and logged areas were restored for recreational purposes.

·         Sungai Congkak Recreational Forest (SCFC) is one location that features a river and waterfalls.

·         From the entrance and for about 2km in, the river offers diverse fun in gurgling streams, mini cascades and bathing pools. Just 11 minutes away is Perdik Fall.

·         The district is also home to the indigenous Temuan people and visitors can visit one of these villages.

·         The orang asli continue to be the best guides for those looking at off-grid jungle hikes and visitors looking to buy freshly laid eggs, look out for half cut boxes hanging at the doors of village houses.

Hulu Langat is popular for its natural surroundings. Large area of nature are being protected such as hill, waterfall, hot spring and many more. 

•There are 80% of people in Hulu Langat in the age of 0-49 years old while people within 50-70+ years has only 20%.
