11 year old Jaycee Dugards' mother does not kiss her goodbye on the morning her entire life changes. She leaves for the bus stop without telling her step father Carl goodbye because she isn't his biggest fan, and he is not hers. They simply coexist together for her mothers sake. She gets half way up the hill to the bus stop when she feel sharp pain and overwhelming helpless ness, followed by a large man lifting her into his car and taking her away from her life for the next 18 years. He takes her to his home with his wife Nancy. Phillip, that is. Phillip and Nancy Garrido have kidnapped 11 year old Jaycee, and for the next 18 years will keep her captive in their backyard. Over the years Jaycee gains freedoms, but is still too afraid to leave. She is mentally, verbally, and sexually abused by Phillip horribly over the course of these years, and Phillips wife, Nancy, does nothing but watch jealously over the attention Phillip is not giving her, but giving this young girl. When she is 14, Jaycee has her first child, A. A will be 15 when they finally escape. Jaycee has many opportunities to escape while she is pregnant with A, but is so terrified of the outside world, she stays. She owns many different cats that Phillip gives her and takes away over the years to keep her company, along with the dream of seeing her mother again. Three years later Jaycee will have another child, G. When this happens, Phillip changes Jaycee's name to Alissa, and her two children will become her sisters instead. The sexual abuse gets less and less over the years, and the drug abuse gets less and less as well, but there are still deep issues with Phillip. He claims "angels" make him do the things he does, and he can hear them everywhere. Jaycee lives this normal, to her, life every single day until she reaches the age of 29 and when Phillip confesses, and she and the girls are set free, finally. After she tells her story she also talks about what it was like to be free. It is a learning experience to her each and every day, but with the help of her mother, she and her girls are leading a normal life, and never looking back.

Jaycee Dugard- Main Character and author. Kidnapped by Phillip and Nancy Garrido from ages 11-29. The complete victim, and relies on Phillip for every single thing, and is forced to trust him for 18 years of her life.

Phillip Garrido- Kidnapper, rapist, pedophile. One of the main characters. The person who stole Jaycee Dugards' life for 18 years. He doesn't have respect for everyone and holds deep, dark, and twisted issues.

Nancy Garrido- Wife to Phillip, main character. Afraid to do anything, hooked on drugs with her husband. She is extremely jealous of the attention Jaycee gets, and never fully likes her, which bothers Jaycee over the years. Completely wishes she wouldn't have been involved in the situation, but does nothing to make it right.

Jaycee's mother, Terry, her sister, Shayna, and her step father, Carl.
These characters do not have large parts in this book because Jaycee was separated from them for so long. Carl is not supportive and dislikes 11 year old Jaycee, but when Jaycee is rescued, Carl is no longer in the picture. Shayna is 1 when Jaycee was taken, and just like her mother, Terry, she was accepting and grateful she came home. They both love Jaycee so much, and are thankful for her safe return. They make her life normal now, and are always there to protect her.

Theme

Keep holding on to hope.
I chose this theme because that is exactly what Jaycee did. She had to hold onto her hope to stay alive, and care for her two children. She sacrificed so much, and did what she had to do to stay alive. Although she was extremely sad, Jaycee did not give up. She had hope that she would be free and some day see her mother again. She hoped and prayed and survived. To this day Jaycee holds onto that hope while she is using her freedom to the fullest and living a now normal life.

I would recommend this book because these types of things need to be noticed. People need to realize that they can't do this type of thing without eventually getting caught. This book is written very simply, and you can see the passion this author had and the hope she held onto in this book. She deserves to be heard, I give this book 5 out of 5 stars!
