Early in the book Ponyboy said,“Since mom and dad were killed in an auto wreck , the three of us get to stay together only as long as we behave”(3). He really wants to stay with his brothers because it's the only family he has left. Also if he stays with his brothers, he can still be with the gang. The gang is also family to him and he doesn’t want to be separated from his family because it is all he has left.

He keeps all of his feeling inside to everyone but Johnny. He only tells Johnny because he gets what he is going through. He feels misunderstood and different from the gang, because he is soft inside but he acts tough around the gang. He doesn’t think people should fight and the gang likes fighting. “I couldn't tell Dally that I hated to shoot things. He’d think I was soft”(86).Ponyboy doesn’t want the gang thinking he is soft so he acts tough around them. But sometimes he tells Johnny.

He doesn't want to lose the people he loves. Towards the end of the book he said,”Darry, do you think they'll split us up. Put me in a home or something?”(157). So Pony is very worried his brother will be tore apart, and he will have to go in a foster home. If he is put in a foster home he might never see his brothers or the gang again. Ponyboy feels like other people shouldn’t be in control or higher rank than others. He wants everyone to be the same and for there not to be fighting. He wants the Socs and greasers to get along and be friends.

Throughout the book he changes and sees the world in many different ways, which makes him a dynamic character. Ponyboy has a lot of different traits. At different times during the book he shows different sides of himself that makes him a round character. “Yeah.’ I sighed, wishing I had some paint to do a picture with while the sight was still fresh in my mind”(77). He is showing the softer side of himself to Johnny while he watches a sunset. “And what happens to be so funny about it?’ I said stiffly”(78).When people talk about Ponyboy’s mom and dad he shows a rougher side of himself. He puts up walls to protect himself from all the memories.

He has an “Inner flame and passion that can truly shine.” That means he is very concupiscent about the things he loves. Ponyboy “Listens to many people, but talks to few.” He likes to keep his feelings inside and not let other people know how he is truly feeling. He will observe how other people feel and communicate. Pony will talk the people that take the time to talk to him. Therefore, Ponyboy relates to most people.
