You can do an ELA lesson interpreting the lyrics. Students can then be guided to write their own line of lyrics to then be read aloud to a backing track of a hip hop beat. This will enable each class to compose their own class hip hop lyric.

You can also explore the roots of Hip Hop and go over the geography of the 5 boroughs of NY.

Culture, in a broad sense, connects to all areas of study. Hip-Hop culture is American culture. We can study history, art and music from this lense. Economics can come into play by seeing how some people lived especially in the divide of the Bronx. We can see the social effects clear as day through lyrics and events put together through the love of Hip-Hop. Studying Hip-Hop is studying America's development.

Hip-Hop can be used to teach musical skills like syncopation of rhythms, sampling, and composition. Additionally, the culture of Hip-Hop can extend into nearly all subject areas. Teaching analytical skills when reading lyrics, understanding figurative language, teaching historic experiences of African American and other minority groups. The use of art and fashion can also be examined as ways to explore group versus individual expression.
