Pre-Civil War slavery was horrid. Slaves were beaten, tortured, and overworked. Mistreated emotionally and physically, many slaves still lived spiritually. Solomon Northrup said, "scars upon a slaves back were considered evidence of a rebellious or unruly spirit, and hurt his sale"(Northrup).

Slavery During the War

Slavery during the Civil War was different due to the fact that many slaves did not support the Confederate cause. Some did, and were even willing to fight for it. Slave labor was the cornerstone of the Confederate movement and hired slaves helped to feed confederate soldiers and families. Many others escaped to Union borders and helped fight with the Union to end slavery, causing the north gather a uniform policy known as emancipation. This gave many slaves hope, for example, " 'Jerry, the sooner the war is over, the sooner we'll be free' "(Jerry Moore).

Sadly after the Civil War many things did not change. This is a time period known as reconstruction. The 14th and 15th amendments were passed, declaring slaves as United States citizens and declaring their rights to vote. Accepted in the North, these rights were denied in the South. Groups like the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), a terrorist group, were formed to keep slaves from voting. "De Democrats done got scared 'cause so many niggers gwine to vote fer de other side" (George Fleming). Slaves were hired to do the same jobs again for little, if any pay. Black Codes were passed in the south setting guidelines for blacks, like not being able to buy, rent, or live in a house within city limits.
