In chapter two for example, he gives a list of allowances the slaves were given monthly and yearly, "monthly allowance of food, eight pounds of pork, or it's equivalent in fish, and one bushel of corn...two coarse linen shirts, one pair of trousers, one pair of stockings...There were no beds given to the slaves." He shows the reader how cruel the slaves were treated. Yet, when the slaves were given their little amount of food and clothing they sang in happiness.
