I think this because his evil or negative effects were more significant to the society that Is now La Republica Dominicana rather than his few positive actions. I feel this because the torture and theft Columbus brought to the island cannot be replaced. The reasoning for him to be considered a positive figure is extremely weak. For example the  sources state that the excuse for him being such a terrible person is because those were the morals of his time period and although that very well may be a factor, the statement does still consider him a terrible person despite what people are trying to say on the contrary. Columbus was still his own person very well capable and qualified to make his own decisions. He could have easily chosen the path to be a good person and simply explore the island but not abuse. He chose the villainous path. For example, just because a person pressures you to do drugs or steal does not mean you ae obligated to do it although you may feel like you have to. Those who do may be considered weak mined which are the majority of people who cannot say no , and are ignorant or naïve of the wrongdoings being committed.
