Chloe's Upcycle by Chloe Colquhoun

The creative process intertwines my current art practice with an ongoing charity project - The Battlefield Rest X Articulate. The plan is to upcycle a column from the balustrade of the Battlefield Rest into a work of art to be displayed and auctioned off. All money raised will benefit the young people at Articulate Cultural Trust.

Through my work, I aim to capture the complex relationship between human beings and their environment, to pay homage to nature as the natural support system that sustains us. In my investigation of ecology, I employ sustainable practices to reduce waste and repurpose materials for art.

My practice requires creative flexibility as materials are often dependent on chance and seasonal changes. This can be observed in the material diversity, ranging from snow, bark and leaves to metals and plastics. Discarded objects and organic elements feature prominently in my work - juxtaposing wasteful culture with the natural world.

I create site-specific installations, often temporary and outdoors, as well as assembled paintings featuring designs inspired by human society. The work highlights the imbalance between humanity and nature, reminding the viewer of the finite resources fuelling the consumerist dream

The Battlefield Rest is one of the most iconic buildings in the Southside of Glasgow. Sitting under the imposing turrets of the old Victoria Infirmary, it was built as the first of a number of tram stations planned for Glasgow. The onset of World War One stopped further plans and it is unique.

Designed by Frank Burnet and Boston Architects, its Edwardian style showcases many Art Nouveau features including the iconic balustrade, made up of 130 columns, that runs around the roof.

The existing columns have been in place for 30 years, and work has started to replace them while retaining the character of the existing building. These new columns are being made by local furniture maker Paul Hodgkiss. The building has been home to a much loved Italian Restaurant for 27 years, and owner Marco Giannasi, inspired by COP 26 taking place in Glasgow in 2021, is driving a unique and exciting upcycling project.

I will start by removing the paint, sanding it down and coating it with wood stain - the start point for all my designs. The top part is a bit rotted, so I'm going to remove it.

I will then secure the column and hammer the coins into the wood using a wooden mallet. Then paint pinstripes on it in either a hue of green and yellow or purple and red. Lastly, add trimmings of copper coloured paint.

Used a wood-cutting tool to carve out slots in the branch and glued in the coins. The technique is more time consuming but a safer way to attach the coins. Sometimes the wood can be a bit old and is at risk of splitting if hammered in. The cutting tool could be a better technique for the column. My only concern is the coins arent as seamlessly slotted in and sit wonkier this way.
