- When Natives hunted for food, they hunted for animals, which is a part of the environment. For example, Plateau people mostly hunted deer and caribou, and also hunted for smaller animals such as coyotes, foxes, raccoons, hares, etc.

- Inuit people hunted for sea mammals such as seals (meat and  blubber), walruses (tusks and meat for the dogs to eat, beluga whales (blubber), narhwals (tusks and meat for the dogs to eat).

They would take hot stones and place them in water to boil it to make broth.

- For fishing, the Eastern Woodland people would use hooks, weirs, leisters, and nets, all of which were made by themselves from forest material.

- Woodland people would cook their food inside containers made of wood and bark, mainly from birch trees.

- The Northwest Coastal People would either bake, steam or boil meat and vegetables without the use of pots or pans, but used heated rocks in a fire, which they then put the rocks into a cedar box or a basket full of water, which would boil the water and cook the food.

- The Eastern Woodland people would prepare their meat by roasting or boiling it over a fire, and then they would eat it right away.
