The sign of the cross to signify the start of the sacrament and to call upon the holy spirit to guide us through our catholic faith. The affirmation of responsibilities shows the action being taken for the parents, sponsors, family and friends to assit and for the candidate to walk theough the catholic faith and renew the holy spirit. Laying of the hands is a significant action as this signifies the call upon to the gifts of the Holy Spirit to follow and reflect through the person being confirmed within the Catholic Faith.

The History of Confirmation is proceeded the same way we do it today in the catholic faith as it is a ritual. The ceremony was enclosed with the laying of the hands, anointing the receiver with chrism and join the catholic faith community for entity with the holy spirit being brought upon the receiver of the Sacrament of Confirmation. Confirmation was once apart of the first catholic sacrament, Baptism. After the baptism was proceeded the confirming of the new life into the catholic faith would take place in conclusion of the Baptism Liturgy. The ages of the recipients were lowered in the early 19000’s by Pope Pius X to 7. Over the time the ceremony of Confirmation has passed many faithful meanings for example, ‘sacrament of adulthood and becoming ‘a soldier of Christ’. The confirmation sponsors have always had the role of being the supporter and a faithful person who has received communion and who has be confirmed. The history of confirmation may develop over time but the ceremony of being confirmed will always have its core meaning and value as a ritual is an established or prescribed procedure for a religious or other rite.
