Persephone's cheerful and spirited personality had caused Hades to fall in love with her. Due to his love for her, he kidnapped her with Zeus' help. Persephone's screams could be heard by her mother, which caused Demeter to search all over Earth with torches in order to find her. Unfortunately when Persephone had returned, she had eaten a pomegranate seed which caused her to return to the Underworld until Spring.
