Larsen does not approve of Passing because Clare was a direct example of this and she killed her off. The story shows how Clare goes through her life passing. While the positives about passing such as how they can go into white only restaurants and hotel are mentioned, the story mainly talks about the disadvantages. Both Irene and Gertrude judge Clare harshly and try to explain to her all of the potential consequences of her actions. However Clare ignores this and does what she wants all leading to her dying for an "unknown" reason.

Larsen disapproves of passing because the end of the story (Clare's death) is an example of an ultimate consequence of passing. Also, 'passing' effects Clare and everyone around her in a negative way. She believes that while 'passing' may have its advantages, at the end of the day it has an extreme negative effect.

I think that Larson's view on "Passing" is that she didn't approve of it. For example, Irene did not approve of it but Clare did. For example Irene passed but only when it was convenient and didn't try to hide her race. But Clare made passing her entire life and lied about her actual race and in the end was in a sticky situation which resulted in consequences. Since the author focuses on how passing for Irene was not that bad I think she agrees with passing to a small extent. With Clare, the author focuses on all of the harm that Clare goes through so I think she disapproves of passing when it starts getting someone in trouble.

By the end of the story Larsen makes it very clear that passing is not a good idea, and there will be consequences if you do. I think she is trying to scare people off, with the message that if you pass, it could lead to serious things like dying.

Nella Larsen seems to disapprove of passing as a way of life, but believes that it is a necessity in certain situations. Whenever a character passes in their life, integrating into white society, they eventually get burned and only have painful things to say about experiences that should be great, but when used in necessity is let go. For example, when Clare and Irene are talking in her house and Clare talks about her pregnancy, Clare admits to having been worried sick the whole time about the child coming out dark skinned, while Irene didn't seem to care about the color of her children. Clare's worry kept her from enjoying what most would consider to be a joyous time in her life, becoming a mother. In contrast, when Irene passes as white in a fancy hotel so she can escape the heat which threatened to make her pass out, she has some worry she will be discovered and politely thrown out, but not enough to outweigh the relief of getting out of the heat.
