He forced her to change her look so he could relive his fantasy girl. The entire movie is a giant build up until the final scene in which John Ferguson reveals the murder plot that has led them to that point. With this new realization, the only thing left to do is conclude the movie in one final act. The last scene kills off Madeleine by having a nun appear (for some reason) to scare her into accidentally falling to her death. I liked how it was mysterious, but it was slow and had unfinished endings. We never found out what happened the blonde artist ex-girlfriend or the husband who killed his wife. I liked the storyline; however, I thought it wasn't realistic how Madeleine never notice or became suspicious of Scottie following her. I was glad that Scottie figured out that Judy was acting as Madeleine because I would have been mad if he never found out that his love didn't actually die. The ending was disappointing and annoying. It felt like the producers were sick of filming and didn't know how else to end the movie. The audience finds themselves not particularly enraptured with how it is shot, but keeps watching just to find out what happens in the end. However, the ending leaves off with just as much confusion as the rest of the movie. I found myself disappointed in the ending, because it does not have as much complexity as the rest of the movie. Vertigo is entertaining the first time since the audience is uncovering the mystery, but I can't see myself watching it again knowing how the ending will go. Overall, this movie was okay and I can check it off my list, but I probably wouldn't watch it again in the future.

Throughout the course of the movie I continued to get second hand embarrassment from what Scottie was doing in the entire movie. From the moment his character began to follow Madelaine to the end of the movie. The dialogue and the relationship between Scottie and Madelaine was super weird for me to watch. I had to avert my gaze several times in order to remain in the room, especially during the aggressive smooching scenes that took place between Scottie and Madelaine. The plot itself was intriguing, though it was overly complex and had a lot of plot holes and loose ends. That being said, I was definitely drawn into the movie initially due to the strange filming and intriguing plot. I gave this movie this baby tomato review because that was how I was feeling during the movie, and that's the expression I had during the cringiest scenes. It was not a bad movie by any means, but it should not take over two hours to tell a story with this many plot holes. The storyline was complex and interesting, but it seemed to be even too complex for the writer, as they clearly couldn't patch up all the holes created by their continuous want to add more. For example: at the beginning of the film, the main character, John Ferguson, seems to have a past relationship with Midge Wood, a relationship which would be really interesting to explore as a subplot in the overall story, but once John meets Madeline/Judy, Midge is completely left in the dust. This could serve as a representation of how infatuated John was with Madeline, that he completely forgot about everything else, but even if that was the case, it was done in a careless matter which made it seem like that plot point was just discarded on account of a lack of ideas for where to take it. This careless abandonment of the smaller storylines can be seen throughout the film, leaving the viewer to wonder where those important details went. It seemed that the writer was so focused on the main storyline that they forgot about the smaller, almost more interesting, plot points. She accidently fell off the edge by shear coincidence. It is only natural for this film to feel different from what our generation is used to, as it was released in the 1950s. It may seem too long, or too boring to hold one's attention, but I believe that is something to be appreciated. The cinematography is beautiful, the layout of the scenes is genius, and the story in which it incapsulates is complex and a thrill to follow. Though plot holes can feel like an insult to the audience, I think the loose ends present in Vertigo, such as what happens to Midge, actually helps the film in away. It continues the mystery and wonder, as well as aids the film to be one of Alfred Hitchcock's most complex films. I can understand why some may not favor Vertigo, but I personally thought that the storyline was very intriguing. However, I am someone who enjoys old films and stories. Vertigo is a film of the 50s, and I believe it has much to appreciate. ]]> 2023-05-20 19:24:05 UTC https://padlet.com/aveken2/tixq3h8bmu96tx5n/wish/2598490442 https://padlet.com/aveken2/tixq3h8bmu96tx5n/wish/2598537817 I really enjoy examining the themes and symbolism used in Vertigo.  While the main plot itself may not feel complete or as easygoing as modern storylines, every character and oddity is a piece of the overall puzzle, which I find very fun.  The elements used throughout Vertigo paint quite a fascinating picture and force the viewer to look deeper into what the film is trying to say.  The use of the colors green and red, for example, symbolizes the contrast between distortion and reality.  Madeleine is often shown either wearing or surrounded by the color green, indicating that she is an idealized illusion who Scottie falls for.  Red is more associated with warnings and tension.  The entire vibrant color palette used in the film contributes to the idea of vertigo, a dizzy distortion of reality.  Each one of the characters is used as a tool within the story; each one fulfills some purpose.  Midge, while not extremely developed, is used as a grounding link to Scottie’s past.  She’s a call back to reality which quickly fades as Scottie dips further into his illusions.  Madeleine herself is one of those illusions, a romanticized notion who turns out to be an outright fabrication.  The complexity of each one of the characters and their connections with one another weaves such an interesting web.  It’s true that classic films can move slowly and the style takes some getting used to, but the underlying pieces tucked beneath the surface are what make this and other classics truly genius.  The way Hitchcock plays with subtleties and perception always draws me in, and Vertigo is a shining example of his work.  ]]> 2023-05-20 21:54:51 UTC https://padlet.com/aveken2/tixq3h8bmu96tx5n/wish/2598537817 https://padlet.com/aveken2/tixq3h8bmu96tx5n/wish/2598561175 I think as a whole the film was good. I feel at points it was a little too courageous, and that is where it loses the viewer. It brings out ideas and themes, such as Midge, that it doesn’t address later on in the film. I think this leaves room for the viewer to be underwhelmed with the movie, while taking a step back it actually allows for an air of mystery. I think the symbolism of color is fascinating, truly helping drive the psychological story. It takes us on a character journey of Madeleine/Judy through color, changing from black and whites (Madeleine) to green (Judy). These stark colors present themselves throughout the full film creating a complex story told solely through the use of color. As well as the overall use of red and green to tell a story of reality versus delusion, color is the driving factor within Vertigo. The film allows the viewer to question every moment of reality, contorting our perceptions of the events and their reactions. I enjoyed this flux of questioning reality. I liked the plot and found myself wondering what all of it was leading up to. In the end, however, I, as well as pretty much everyone else, was disappointed. To build up an entire storyline for two hours, have viewers at the edge of their seats wondering what is going to happen next, just to kill off one of the main characters and end the movie at that, was frustrating to say the least. Obviously everybody was upset about it. The main character, John, was also a horrible (retired) detective. The only reason he was able to follow Madeline was because she knew he was there. It also made no sense as to why she would change almost everything about her to look like Madeline just for him, when he should've either learned to like her as she is or move on from Madeline. I tried to take the movie's release date into account, but I ultimately don’t think I should give it the benefit of the doubt just for being older or having a well-known director. Midge’s obvious affection for John Ferguson could’ve added an extra layer I think the film needed. Their banter back and forth didn’t disrupt the flow of the film, but instead aided an otherwise dragged out movie. Midge becoming homicidal could have been the twist the movie seemed to be gearing up towards. She’s the one who has been with him through it all, and he’s throwing it away for an infatuation with a married woman. Instead, I borrowed Vertigo from the library just to watch another 20 minutes of John slamming his face into Judy’s while molding her into “another woman”. Edgar Allan Poe said that the best horror stories end after their climax, and Vertigo would have been better for taking that advice. The main character loses yet another person due to his fear of heights. He gets no redemption arc, no closure, and instead continues to live on with this fear and guilt. The audience knows it was a set up, but John remains oblivious. Boom, there’s your ending. It’s twisted, the audience is getting whiplash from watching Madeleine’s death and then finding out Judy was an actress who is still alive, you’re feeling heartbroken for John, fade to black. It could have even ended when John spots the “Madeleine” lookalike who is actually Judy. Add some suspenseful music, and it leaves the audience wondering what he’s going to do about it. Overall, I wasn’t completely bored, and I don’t think this movie was bad by any means. It just suffers from I-didn’t-need-to-be-over-two-hours-long-and-I-underused-the-most-interesting-character-itis. I’d give it a tomato that’s growing sprouts. If the film had ended after Madeleine's death I truly feel like it would have been more interesting than the actual ending. Up until her death I actually enjoyed the plot and found it interesting, the whole plot line of Carlotta possessing Madeleine was quite interesting and would have made the movie better if it was true. Overall the film wasn't too bad, but the ending was disappointing. After watching this movie, I am not likely to watch another. I had high expectations, although I am not familiar with Alfred Hitchcock but I know that he had made many famous movies before. The movie was disappointing, to say the least. The main character was meant to bring the audience along in a mysterious and frightening case, but instead forced us into cringe-worthy interactions and blatant stalking. Interactions between the characters were dry and uninteresting. The cherry on top of it all is the uncomfortable forcing of the lead female role to change her outfits entirely to please the main character. The plot leads you to believe something big will wrap up the experience of the movie, but in the end it only repeats itself.
