The Space Race - The fireplace of The Cold War

In a way, the Space Race did contribute to the intensity of the Cold War. The race itself was about countries trying to send someone of their country to the moon. The USSR was technically the first nation to win, because they successfully sent their first man-made satellite, Sputnik, around the earth for one orbit. The USA, however, was the first nation to land a spacecraft on the moon & have someone mark it. In this case, Neil Armstrong was the first man to ever reach the moon.

Sputnik is the first satellite ever made in history. It was created back in 1957, by the USSR. The USSR was currently in a "space race" with America, so they were hastily trying to make a device that they could launch into space. The resulting design was Sputnik, the world's first satellite ever launched into space. This seemingly small act was actually the beginning of what some would call the "space age", where countries all across the world are now constructing spacecrafts for transport to other planets.

In 1957, Russia, more commonly known as the USSR during the time, launched the world's first satellite into space. This space launch somewhat marked the "end" of the space race, however this abrupt victory did not faze the USA. In response to Russia's launch, the USA began to speed up construction of their own satellite, which made worldwide tensions higher. Nobody knew what the USA was going to do, however, the fact still remains that Russia still technically won the space race.

In 1958, the USA made up its mind. In order to maximize space efficiency, they would have to create a specific type of organization, dedicated to space travel. This organization would be called NASA, or National Aeronautical & Space Administration. The purpose of this agency would be to create a method of travel for someone to safely land on the moon. This agency developed, tested, experimented, and invented for 10 years after its creation in 1958, before finally deciding to launch.

In 1969, on July 16th, NASA finally proceeded with project Apollo, and prepared to launch the world's first occupiable spacecraft, the Apollo 11. Commander Neil Armstrong was one of 3 people aboard the ship's first launch. The ship managed to launch without any highly dangerous problems, and the Apollo 11 made it's 4 day journey relatively smoothly. On July 20th, 1969, Neil Armstrong stepped off the Apollo 11, and took humanity's first space walk. When Armstrong returned to the ship, he planted the US flag on the ground, and made a statement to be remembered for decades:
"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
The crew of the Apollo 11 then began their journey home, which took 4 days once more. The team safely landed, and the event was spontaneously spread across the world. The US was instantly recognized as the winner of the space race, despite Russia technically reaching space first.
