If I was to go on a journey from which I might never return, I would bring with me the necessities; food, water, money, clothes, and a weapon of some sort. I would leave behind all of my expensive items and things I could live without. I wouldn't leave my phone behind, though, because I know I would want to keep in touch with loved ones. I would say goodbye to my entire family and all of my friends. I would say the longest goodbyes to my immediate family and my grandparents. I would do this face to face, even though I know it would be difficult. My family is 100% the most important aspect of my life. I couldn't live without them.

Thoreau believes that society is pointless according to the excerpt from "Self-Reliance." In my opinion, there are a few things wrong with society today. For starters, I believe that today's society is too materialistic. I feel that there are many people today who genuinely could not live without a cell phone. I also believe that people in today's world are a bit too sensitive to certain topics. It happens way too often where people freak out over the simplest mistake made by someone. It's almost as if a societal mob mentality takes hold when one person messes up, and nobody has any sense of individuality.

I believe this quote simply means to follow your dreams, and don't be blinded by today's societal norms. Don't let anything get in the way of your passion. If you do, your life won't be anywhere near as good as it could be. You will be left feeling unfulfilled when you could feel satisfied with the way your life went. Once you become capable of being determined to complete a task no matter what it be, life will become so much simpler. My own dreams are to follow in the footsteps of my dad. I know I can do it if I stay focused and determined, and don't let anything get in my way.

I think this quote means that if a man doesn't act just like his peers, it is because he simply doesn't want to. He wants to be different. To me, this quote means that individuality is something to be valued highly. When I lived in Toms River, I got involved with the wrong group of people. They would often do things that I didn't feel comfortable with. I heard a different drummer in these situations because I didn't want to do anything that would jeopardize my future. I knew it wouldn't be smart to do the things my "friends" were doing, so I didn't. The "friends" didn't react how I expected them to. Surprisingly, they were okay with my choices. They weren't mad at me for not doing what they did because I earned their respect.

One movie I can think of that displays transcendental ideas is "Bridge to Terabithia". Throughout the entirety of this movie, the main character, Leslie Burk, displays actions that are totally out of the norm. From the way she dresses, to the way she acts, everything about her is different, but she doesn't care. She is proud of her individuality.

"In the woods, is perpetual youth."-Emerson

The reason I chose this quote is simply for the fact that even though it's short and sweet, it packs a lot of meaning. The woods are deep,as is your past. Your youth is in those woods, those deep, menacing woods. And as some people are afraid to enter the woods, some people are also afraid to venture into their past. There are many people who are convinced that the past is behind them, so they don't ever wish to explore it. Those who are brave enough to take on the exploration, are the true Transcendentalists in this world.

I've made many important decisions in my life. And many of them have effected my life in ways I never thought possible. But if there is one decision that stands out above the rest, it would be the way I decided to deal with the passing of my dad. I always wished I would have handled it better than I did. Days went by where all I would do is lay in my room and cry. I wouldn't even eat anything. Days turned to weeks and still nothing changed. I just wanted to cry until I couldn't cry anymore. I seemed to think that if I cried enough, maybe he would come back. I couldn't deal with the fact that I would never see my dad again. My family worried for me, but at the same time, understood. I wish that instead of crying my life away, I would have taken the time to help the rest of my family cope with what had happened. My mom, and my sisters especially. I wish I would have realized that there was nothing I could do to change what had happened. If I could change this version of the past, I would do it in a heartbeat. I would make myself realize that I wasn't the only one grieving, and tell myself that I need to help my family.
