Closing Activity by Monika Niebrzydowski

Choose one of the three excerpts to listen to (make sure to take note of where to stop the video!) 1. Identify the dynamics you can hear within the piece. 2. Describe any emotions which are conveyed, and explain how the dynamics influenced the overall mood of the excerpt. 3. Imagine you were directing a movie or music video, and wanted to create a scene based on your chosen excerpt. Write a few sentences describing what this scene would look like.

This excerpt is generally very quiet and played with a piano dynamic. There are slight shifts in the dynamic level, which allow certain phrases to be emphasized. This can be seen particularly at 0:50, when the pianist moves into a new section of the music and plays mezzo forte. The piano dynamic in this piece gives the music a sentimental and warm feeling tinted with grief and melancholy.

I imagine an old cobblestone street caught in a drizzle in the early afternoon. I would say the dynamics heard is a crescendo as the speed increases, so does the volume.

With this particular symphony, I can imagine a garden full of butterflies, flowers, bees, hummingbirds, and a single tree in the distance. I can see a single family sitting under this tree enjoying a picnic while they take in the sights of the garden and appreciate the insects and the birds that are drawn there just as they were drawn there themselves.

1. The piano is being played "mezzo-piano" most pieces with a few notes being played forte for accentuation.

2. The emotion seems to convey a melancholy mood. The mental image I get in my head is of a girl staring out of a window on a rainy day. It sounds like the type of music I would find after literally looking up something like "rainy day music" on YouTube, and sounds a bit like the instrumentals that are often sampled by modern "lofi/chillhop" artists to convey an image of sadness.

3. Monica, I also agree with the cafe imagery. "Sad sounding" piano music works well for imagery of a rainy day or scenes of melancholy such as heartbreak or unrequited love, or even just a solo day outside at a cafe studying with headphones on. If this were a scene in a movie, this piece would probably play with very little dialogue accompanying it to drive home the feeling of loneliness and perhaps a small compilation of lonely or sad scenes like I described above.

1. This piece by Satie starts in pianissimo. At times, the music's dynamic shifts to piano. While listening to the piece.
2. I felt like I was slowly drifting down a calm river. It is a very dream-like feeling. All of the stresses in my life seem to drift away while listening. Almost as if I become gently isolated from the world around me (but not in a bad way). The lack of sforzando, or any lasting period where the music's dynamics become higher than piano, created a sort of ethereal mood. Similar to the flow of a nocturne; however, absent of sadness.
3. In creating my scene, I would have the movie be a film noir. The main character would be at a park, which is located next to the ocean. It is a cloudy evening and the main character is leaning on a banister while looking off at the seemingly absent horizon. At this time, the character is lost in an empty space of their mind, void of thoughts. They are simply existing while looking off into the distance.

A higher sax then joins around mezzo forte, and continues in a higher octave, which also makes it sound louder.

2. The piece has a lot of movement with the bassline, crescendos, and staccato notes. It feels sneaky and pensive. Then there's that really fast section around 1:45 that lasts for a few measure--that part feels like a frantic chase scene.

3. I'm imagining the opening scene of a noir film featuring a paranoid detective. I'm picturing them walking down the street with a fedora hiding their face, a long pea coat, and a trail of smoke behind them. They're taking in everything around them, looking for a lead. The frenetic section could be something that catches their attention, but quick dissipates into a false alarm.

I can hear slower piano (soft notes) being contrasted with somewhat faster mezzoforte (moderately loud) notes all being played in minor key (I think).
2. This piece has a somewhat melancholy feel to it, as I can imagine someone reminiscing over someone they miss badly as they look back on old memories of the times they used to feel. This melancholy feel is emphasized by the contrast of the longer mezzopiano notes with the slightly faster mezzoforte notes.
3. The piece gets more exciting without being less calm somehow.
2) The emotions I felt were tranquil and lovely. The dynamics helped maintain this mood throughout the piece even when they started to play a little bit more forte.
3) I can imagine this piece being used for an old-timey film. Perhaps filmed in black and white to give an aged aesthetic. For some reason, I can imagine this piece being used in a romantic movie. Its also reminiscent of something from an old Disney animation. Cheesy but that's what comes to mind.

The soft playing and slow tempo make this piece feel calm and quiet. There are shifts back and forth from all the levels of piano - but I don't think it ever gets loud enough to enter into forte territory.
Emotionally, the piece conveys a sense of calm, serenity, maybe melancholy, but maybe just quiet determination. I think the last comes from the slight change from mezzopiano to piano when the bass is stronger. If I wanted to set a movie scene to this music, I think it would be one where a character is leaving some kind of situation which is not good for that character, though the character might be sometimes or mostly happy there. Maybe I have actually seen this scene. I wonder if there is an app for this sort of thing. I really enjoyed your lesson.

1. I feel like I heard messo forte in this song. This was a dynamic song having some rising and falling but it felt like messo forte throughout.

2. Felt very jazzy and sneaky. Felt like you were taking a stroll or going on some form of a adventure where you were discovering

3. I imagine this is like COVID in NYC when no one was in the streets and walking around, and then it transitions into all these people starting to come out of their homes.

1) I heard lots of crescendos and decescendos in the piece.

2) I felt very calm at the start of the video. It felt like I was about to start a really big day and that everything was going great. Then I felt excitement and anticipation for things to come, I feel like the dynamics really contributed to the emotions I felt because the changes in volume helped to shift the moods in the piece.

3) I would play this song in a movie where a character is coming home to his family or loved ones after doing something heroic. Maybe the character has served in the army and is going home to see his/her family.
