Parents: Math (as well as the other sujbects your child will learn) is a very important subject, not only because of testing, but it supports critical life skills for all children. The exercises in this lesson support not only state standards, but fundamental concepts that will help your child as they get older and develop critical thinking skills. I am including a few links that I think you will find usefull in understanding the importance of learning mathematical concepts. Remember, together we will prepare the children for the future!
http://mathsolutions.com/making-sense-of-math/number-sense/understanding-number-sense/
http://oureverydaylife.com/can-first-grade-students-understand-addition-subtraction-11887.html
https://www.teachervision.com/pro-dev/teaching-methods/48934.html

- The word integer comes from the Latin word for "untouched."
- Integers include all zero, all positive numbers (1, 2, 3, etc.) and negative numbers (-1, -2, -3, etc.).
- Integers can be traced back to Babylonian times (almost 4,000 years ago).
- Integers were introduced in 1563 by Abermouth Holst. He was conducting experiments with bunnies and elephants and realized he needed a way to keep track of the bunnies (they kept growing in numbers). He spent 15 years working on developing the number system.
- In 1890 Japanese mathematicians developed the system of integers (However zero was not included).
- Zero had been developed by early Babylonians, Mayans and Indians. It is believed the Indians were the first to "officially" recognize zero and use it in mathematical formulas and equations.
- Before the introduction of zero, mathematicians used black spaces in equations. The black space represented "nothing being there."
- Negative numbers were adopted into the number system in 1800's.
- Before integers, people used rocks, sticks and even their fingers to count. Some things never change.
Students go to SECTION 1.
Source: http://463431396329892656.weebly.com/history-of-integers.html
