Students created mind maps based on the artist Pedro Linares Lopez's "Alebrijes". They explored the subheadings: The four elements, Patterns, materials, The Artist, and more.
They then went on to create Mood boards based on one of the four elements. This is an integral part of what makes an "Alebrije" as they must contain at least three out of four of the natural elements. Their mood boards consisted of colors, patterns, textures, and animals that they associated with the element. Magazines were used to find imagery.
Exploration and Concept development:
The students then went on to explore in more detail what they would focus on creating for their sculptures based on what they found in their mind maps and mood boards. They focused on recognizable and interesting features of animals, colors, patterns, and materials they may use.
The students then used these information sheets to inform and inspire the final design of their sculptures. This was done in groups with each student drawing and designing the parts of the sculpture they will be focusing on. They will use these designs as a guide throughout the making process. They discussed what materials they would need for the following lesson, and how they would manipulate them into the shapes and sculptural elements in the plans.

The students learned about clay through the exploration of the medium. They did this by creating pinch pots which allowed them to explore the manipulation of clay and what it is like to work with it as a medium.
The students then went out and looked in their surroundings for natural objects that contained interesting details, patterns, and textures that they could translate into clay. The students investigated the identification of lines and fonts in magazines and created a collage to show their findings.
The students then went on to explore both line and font for their formal qualities and characteristics. They experimented with font by taking the first initial of their first name and replicating it in multiple fonts. They could be as creative as they liked.
They then went on to identify and experiment with lines. They did this by completing a worksheet to fill in boxes full of the type of line that was indicated below it.
Exploration and Concept Development:
The students learned about positive and negative space and made contrasting pieces to show their understanding of the terms. They did this by taking a black square piece of paper and cutting shapes and lines out of it. They then stuck the card down and stuck the cutouts in the mirrored position.
The students then created their final designs for their lino prints. They used a template to ensure the design was the same size as the piece of lino they would be working on. Students will be using found materials to create their sculptures. They will learn about the manipulation of a variety of materials through experimentation and trial and error. They will use their design plans as a guide throughout this process to refer back to when they are sculpting. They will create drawings based on their findings to use to inform and inspire their design plans for their ceramic pieces.
They will then start the making process where they will learn about the slip-and-score technique and how to manipulate clay in a variety of ways to create shapes and textures.
I will do a demonstration on how to make slip, how to make slabs and how to attach the pieces together.
