My name is Harrison Schmitt and I am 38 years old. I was born July 3, 1935 and I'm from Santa Rita New Mexico. I am also the only geologist ever to go to the moon. Something interesting about me is that I appear to be allergic to moon dust and get a super stuffy nose. Before I went to the moon, I taught astronauts how to collect geological samples from the moon. Funny right? I was also called Jack Schmitt when I was training to go up to the big, beautiful moon.

I launched to the moon in the Apollo 17 on December 6, 1972. I am the only civilian to go to the moon. This is because all other astronauts were trained military pilots. NASA scientists thought that because the pilots have already been under extreme pressure while flying, they would have an easier time getting into space from all the pressure. I was assigned on to the Apollo 15 backup crew and that meant that I would fly on the Apollo 18 but Apollo 18 and 19 were both canceled in September 1970. This was bad news for the Lunar Geologists supporting the Apollo series. The Geologists then pressured NASA into putting me, a professional geologists, onto a remaining flight. I felt pretty bad for Joe Engle because I took his spot as the Lunar Module Pilot.
