Positive Online Experience

In terms of my own experience in learning online, my main experience has been participating in the Leaders in International Health Programme, 2015. That experience was a tremendous one, especially for my first online learning experience. It was highly interactive, and stimulating and even allowed for group work as groups met online. Using other online resources such as skype and even what's app group helped for communication.

However, for some persons the transition to online learning can be onerous as it means navigating technology, which sometimes is glitchy. My main negative experience has been sometimes being able to access the technological platform that supports the online learning. But I reiterate that ongoing communication - "touching base" - with participants is key to maintaining motivation and interest.

Best...
Jennifer

Tutor Requirements

Dear Team
I have read your responses.
We agree therefore that an online tutor should be multi-faceted . In addition to traditional skills the tutor should be creative and innovative to motivate students to learn.

It has been shown that technological savvy does not equate to successful online learning. It is also argued that although millenials have grown up with technology they I have my limitations with technology but I have found on-line learning a great resource for professional development., but I have had more success with tutor led as compared to video based courses. Can you discuss your own experience and point to specific example where a tutor has influenced or hindered your success in an online course?

Excellent points Jennifer, Online learning can be lonely for some and needs alot more discipline than F2F sessions when you are already committed to time in a given space that 'forces' exchange of information.

Response to Camille re Requirements of a Virtual Tutor

I support the points made by Vishwa and also wish to add that with virtual learning although there is significant learning as a group, can be a lonely exercise when not online, as such it is important as a tutor to connect with your students and ensure that they are able to keep abreast of all that is happening in the class. Communication and guidance is key. Instructions must be clear and ongoing to ensure no one gets lost or uncertain about what is to happen next.

Online learning can also open doors to new levels of creativity and innovation and allows participants and the tutor to hone skills previously unexplored. With the use of online education growing, it is important that tutors be properly prepared to deliver online sessions other that recording lectures and notes and posting them on line. The sessions - both synchronous and asynchronous - need to be interactive and stimulating possibly utilising different media to deliver the sessions. The aim is to reach, stimulate and educate - especially with millennials - who have grown up with technology.

I look forward to continuing the discussion.

Jennifer

- A Tutor utilising Technology for virtual learning has to have the skills of a traditional tutor (F2F) and much more
- Has to spend more time with students, even one-to-one with students having difficulties
- has to be able to be on the job every day since most students tend to focus on online work on weekends and evn holidays - ie mostly when 'normal' work is done
- has to be a specialist in a given academic area but also has to be very 'technology-savvy' to be able to guide students through issues that might arise
- has to be able to 'connect' with his students across the 'ether' buiilding the trust that is easier F2F
- must be able to identify the 'problem children' early to prevent drop-outs and to also prevent possible conflicts in groups
- must be able to deal with students of different age groups, experiences and exposures
- must be prepared and be able to guide the students through the quagmire of false/wrong information readily available online for free

The tutor must be willing to learn and be open to change.

He/she must adapt to new technologies and understand how to use these technologies to motivate learners.

He she must provide explicit instructions to facilitate learning and prepare students to be learners.

Online learning is ubiquitous but has pros and cons.

From the references provided and your own experience discuss the above statements , illustrating key skills that should be demonstrated by an online tutor.

Camille
Team
