The start of the cold war, right after the second world war. After the second world war the two big powers US and the soviet unioun (russia) are extremely suspicious of each other. And with the two countries having different politics and different allies the two countries become enemies. The soviet unioun were allies with countries in eastern Europe and western Asia like Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova and more and had a communism influence on them. Meanwhile the US were alies with western European countries like france, UK, norway and more. And on these countries he US had Democratic influence.

The Red Scare 1945-1991

The red scare was a mindset of the people of democracy and especielly for the people of the US. They were scared for the reds. People who were communist. With propaganda from the government and that the people were scared. They belived that communism was awfull. The red scare influenced people to act differently and to treat others differently.

Truman Doctrine 1947

The Truman Doctrine was a policy from the United States and that the United States would invest with economicall and financial aid to countries that were resisting attempted subjugation from outside countries. And what Truman is pointing at is that the USSR and tempting both Greece and Turkey with communism politics and thoughts. And Truman did not want communism to spread and wanted to do everything in his power to contain communism.

Hollywood 10 1948

The hollywood 10 were actors, directers or workors within hollywood that were accused to being communist and that refused to testify to an anti-communist committee hearing. And for this they were all arrested for this and sent to prison. They were also blacklisted from hollywood. All of these 10 people were also confirmed of being communism as well, they had all been a part of Communist Party USA at some point.

USSR first nuclear bomb 1949

After the US being the only country for 4 years to own and having the power of nuclear weapons the USSR managed to figure out how to create them. And from this point on the USSR would keep producing them. This is where the first aspects of a nuclear war started. This also put the rest of the world in fear not only of communism but also the soviet unions weapons.

McCarthyism

McCarthyism is something that came from Joseph McCarthy. He was the known as the senator of Wisconsin. But after a speech by him he rose to power very quickly. In his speech he claimed that the US government was controlled by communism and accused multiple people of supporting communism. He kept on going for years, of accusing multiple people and multiple people with high positions of being a communism. But in the end he never had evidence for for accusations. And for that reason people lost trust in him and his power went down.

China joins the korean war 1950

Korea used to be a part of Japan but after the second world war it became a part of the US until i would be able to build it self up again. But in the north of korea it was influnced by communism and in the south the american influence was still major. June 25th 1950 north korea invaded the south by suprise. But the south had support by the US and their army and fought the north back. But at that point China decided to join in and help the north to fight the south.This caused major problems for the people of Korea and divided the country.

The Rosenbergs 1951

The resenbergs were two US citizen that were accused of being spies for the soviet union spying on the US and giving their secrets to the Soviet union. The couple were arrested and got taken to court. During tie of their investigation there was not any evidence found. But for actions to be made they were sentenced to death. After their deaths they were proven guilty of sending secret information of nuclear weapons to the soviet union.

UN troops enter Korean War 1951

After china joined the war south Korea was losing. So the US reached out for help to the UN and the UN decided to help. UN troops were sent into Seoul (South Koreas capital) to help the US army fight back. The managed to send them back over the 38 parallel and after that the war came to a stalemate and the war was finally over in 1953.

US firsst hydrogen bomb

For three years the US and the USSR had been on the same level of nuclear weapons. But in 1952 the US managed to create the first hydrogen bomb. It was based on the same techniques as the nuclear bomb but it was 1000 times stronger. With this new weapon the US was put ahead of the USSR. This just pushed the race of who had the stronger weapons further.

Eisenhower Doctrine 1957

The Eisenhower Doctrine was a doctrine explaining the situation in the middle east. Eisenhower was scared that the USSR would influence countries in the middle east with their communism. For this reason he signed this doctrine explaining that any middle east country could ask for economicall assistance and aid from the US military if they were thretened by armed aggresion. This was because the middle east was so far away from the US so in order for him to keep communism contained he wanted to help counties to keep them away. Even if it would cost him a lot of money.

1960s election JFK vs R. Nixon 1960

This was a really big election, John F Kennedy was the one who won it. He went against Eisenhower who ran for his second term. They had the first televised debate and had over 70 million people watching it live. JFK was also the youngest ever president at the age of 43.

The First Family 1961 (january 20th)

Kennedy was put into office on the 20th of January 1961 and Kennedy being such a young man he still had a young family. He had children of young age and a wife in her late 30s. The newspaper repeatedly put pictures of him and his kids in it. And showed that the most powerful man in the country could still live such a normal and modern life. A lot of people were amused by this. And it brought him a lot of respect.

The Berlin Wall 1961 (august 13th)

The start of the construction of the Berlin wall. This was a project started by the soviet union and they built it to separate the east and west side of Germany. This changed the life for a lot of people in Germany. A lot of peoples family were separated and destroyed. And for the people of western Germany a hard time was upon them. Being led under the USSR they did not recive all of what they needed, such as jobs or food.

Bay of Pigs 1961 (April 17th)

Fidel Castro led the Cuban revelution. And he managed to overthrow the cuban government. Fidel was a self claimed supporter of communism and for that he became good allies with the USSR. President Kennedy did not like this, now communism was way closer to him than it used to be when it was in Europe. Now it was in the northern south americas. So he planned an invasion. This invasion was called the Bay of Pigs and it went terrible. The soldiers were not prepared enough. They landed on the wrong spots, did not have enough resources and got captured.

Cuban missile crisis 1962

The Cuban missile crisis is when the Cold war was at its most intense point. The point when it was on its closest to turn into a nuclear war. Fidel Castro had allied Cuba with the Soviet Union. And the soviet union had sent nuclear weapons to Cuba to store there to threaten the US. The US did not like this and were really scared and did not know what to do. They told the USSR to take them back, but the USSR replied with that the US had nuclear weapons in Turkey and Italy. So they came together at last and decided that both countries shall take away their nuclear weapons from their allied countries. During this time it was extremely close for a nuclear war, because US did not know how to react to this new threat.
