This also changes my perspective as I always thought of china being less technologically advanced.

Some similar methods is that there is both theory and physical lessons that give us more insights into what we are doing and why. Some different methods is that the activities tie very heavily to their heritage and culture. Every briefing and debriefing session has a short section where they relate the activity back to the roots of Chinese culture. There is also an heavy emphasis on etiquette and methods especially for tea ceremony. Every step has a specific reason to achieve the best taste of tea. For the farming lesson, the instructor explained about the tools and equipment that farmers used. With the physical reason also came the meaning and reason of why we are experiencing this and why they still have such lessons. This is to instill and ingrain a sense of responsibility, reverence and sort of deference to our forebears who worked the land and built the nation. They hope to see how we integrate such values into our everyday lives. The farming instructor also emphasised multiple times how he wished that we would be a citizen of both Nanjing and Singapore so as to project unity.

For Yesterday's lesson, i learnt to appreciate tea and its history, something singapore doesnt really do as most of Singapore's tea is in packets. For pottery class, i learnt to use clay and make it into sculptures. For the observation of night time class, i saw how students are having lessons at night, i feel that we are quite fortunate to not have night classes as some of us get tired. But at the same time, i feel it is very productive to get the job done.

For today's class, i went to a farm to harvest yam and feed some animals. The feeding of animals is a pleasant experience and for the harvesting of vegetables, i learnt that it is hard work and the farmers work tirelessly to ensure that we have food on our plates, it also taught me not to waste food as their hard work will be gone to waste.

Something I have learnt in the morning classes and I can use in my life and strive to master is patience needed to write the characters in chinese calligraphy lesson. To correct apply pressure to certain parts of a stroke, imitate and follow the instructor's instructions and finally, writing the character on paper. The process requires a clear mind under pressure when we are unable to copy the character and the determination to try again despite knowing with certainty that we still have yet to master the art of Chinese calligraphy. Under the instructor's careful guidance and curated advice, I was able to recreate the characters showed on screen.

Something interesting I learnt about Nanjing's history is during the Qinhuai river cruise in the evening. It was explained that there was a specific area of the river where an emperor once fished. Then the Qing emperor Qianlongdi heard about this, he made the trip all the way from his capital at Beijing to Nanjing just to try fishing in the river. Another interesting fact about Nanjing's history is that at the Ming Xiao Mausoleum, a seemingly archaic hall was rebuilt due to destruction by the Taiping Tianguo army. The reconstruction was smaller than the original hall hence at the surroundings, the supports of the columns can still be seen and base of the temple was abnormally large for the smaller hall. Also at the Sun Zhong Shan Mausoleum, the Chinese Ding at closer to the base, there are 2 holes in the left Ding which was left from the Japanese shelling. The Dings we're a gift from the Nanjing provincial government to the Mausoleum.

They often symbolise deeper historical or cultural ideas that cannot be understood just by looking at the number itself. For example, the “two important factors” mentioned by the tour guide about Dr. Sun Yat-sen which symbolise jurisdiction and education, essential for building a strong country, show that the numbers can also represent key concepts.

Nestled at the foot of Purple Mountain, it features the famous Sacred Way, a stone pathway lined with statues of animals and officials symbolizing the emperor’s journey to the afterlife. These carvings, rich in detail and symbolism, reflect the Ming belief in harmony between heaven and earth.

Something interesting in Nanjing's history during the trip to Nanjing Museum, there were artifacts from the neolithic era all the way to Qing Dynasty, illustrating the lives of the wealthy back then from the bronze and copper dings and detailed clay figurines, with each subsequent dynasty producing more and more accurate and life like figures. They highlight the Chinese people's wisdom and knowledge. The intricate explanation from Teacher Yu and Teacher Joe gave me more detailed explanations of the function of the artefacts and highlighted how different dynasties produced works of different styles. At the Presidential Palace, the exhibits had many preserved paperworks documenting the political changes that were made. The mix of traditional Chinese architecture from the various pavilions dotting the palace to the neoclassical western architecture as seen from the actual office of Sun Yat Sen shows the sorta tumultuous transformation of China from the 19th century to the 20th century. Laomendong not really lotta stuff to see just a nice tourist destination for people with money but it's pretty close to the city wall which was towering above the little shops.

Something distinctive at Niushoushan are the 2 pagodas with a nine tiered one and a seven tiered one. The nine tiered structure has golden gilded roof tiles and a few smaller towers at the base whereas the smaller seven tiered pagoda is not as prominent compared to the nine tiered one and was at Niushoushan for hundreds of years liao. The place also has a esplanade like structure where (apparently) there are statues of Buddhist deities and revered men of old. The base is composed of alternating arch like structures with a pool of water at the front which reflects the image of the structure. The scenery at Niushoushan is very relaxing and the cool weather made the trip up more enjoyable. At Xinjiekou not really just a lot malls with shops.

the city has repeatedly served as a pivot of political power, crisis, and memory, with each era leaving visible traces in its museums, palaces, and ancient streets. From the Taiping Rebellion, when Nanjing briefly became Tianjing and its urban fabric endured massive upheaval, to the Qing restoration and the birth of the Republic of China in the early 20th century, the city’s spaces were rebuilt and repurposed to symbolize shifting visions of governance. The Nanjing Massacre (1937–1938) marks a stark rupture, forging a national conscience around wartime suffering and sovereignty that continues to shape discourse and memory. Throughout, the Yangtze River and Qinhuai’s winding lanes have tethered politics to place, making the urban landscape a living chronicle of power, resilience, and identity. Visiting the Nanjing Museum offers a material narrative of dynasties and reforms; the Presidential Palace reveals the evolution of political authority from imperial to republican eras; and Laomendong exposes the everyday rhythms of commerce and social life across these transitions. Collectively, these sites illuminate how history is not only what happened, but how a city chooses to remember, rebuild, and define itself in the face of upheaval.

Stories, artefacts and culture helps communities remember their past by reminding them of what have happened in the past through the various stories and artefacts as well as the culture, which each have story behind it that we can all learn from. The mistakes made in the past can help communities shape better decisions about the present and the future by allowing them to learn from their mistakes and improve. For example in the Nanjing massacre Japan has learnt from their mistakes that war is bad and have since worked towards a harmonious relationship with not just China but the whole world. However, the world would still remember what they done and we can all learn about the mistakes made by them.
