Eckleburg in Gatsby jordinforeman https://padlet.com/jordinforeman/tih9gut9mjmxgduf/wish/3592145101 The eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg have much importance in the story of The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald. In chapter two we are first introduced to him, and his eyes symbolize judgement and the loss of spiritual value. Just by the introduction of him it is known he will be an important part in the story. In chapter three of the story his eyes symbolize perception versus reality. In chapter seven the eyes symbolize the eyes of God watching Myrtle's death take place and moral decay. The Doctor witnessing Myrtle's death is a big deal because in the story he is the symbol for the eyes of God. In chapter eight the doctors eyes symbolize the demand of justice for Myrtle's death. Justice for Myrtle is never served. Justice not being served leaves room for thought about what is going to happen to Daisy, will she get away with it or will her karma come.

(Fitzgerald 19) This quote describes Dr. T.J. Eckleburg but in particular it gives a good description of his eyes.


"... his eyes, dimmed a little by many paintless days under sun and rain, brood on over the solemn dumping ground." (Fitzgerald 20) This quote relates the valley of ashes to Dr. T.J. Eckleburg.


"That locality was always vaguely disquieting, even in the broad glare of afternoon, and now I turned my head as though I had been warned of something behind." (Fitzgerald 104) This quote shows that even when you cant see him, it feels like Dr. T.J. Eckleburg is constantly watching.


" 'God sees everything' " (Fitzgerald 134)

This quote is relating God's eyes to the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg.
