The Wonky Donkey by Craig Smith

The Wonky Donkey would be perfect for teaching fluency in the classroom. It has the privilege of being made into a song, meaning students could sing the book along to the song. Also like a song, The Wonky Donkey has a lot of repetition, making it easier to learn fluency. I also think this would benefit students who need to work on phonemic awareness because there are a lot of rhyming words. I think this book could benefit anyone in the younger grades or even those in the upper elementary years who struggle with fluency and phonemic awareness.

Even though The Book With No Pictures seems boring from the outside, the inside has a variety of nonsense words and creative uses of language. I think the book would be great for teaching or assessing fluency, especially prosody as students are challenged to read in different voices. I also think because of the nonsense words it would be great for assessing phonemic awareness, especially a child’s ability to read new words for the first time. I think this book would be suitable for upper elementary students or more advanced lower elementary students.

13 Words by Lemony Snicket

In 13 Words, Lemony Snicket tells a silly story that teaches a variety of different words, from panache to haberdashery. The story reads kind of like a mad libs but hides a much deeper meaning. I think this book would be great for teaching vocabulary of course because of the tier 2 words present in the book. However, I also think after repeated reading this could be a good text for fluency, particularly in the ending part with the opera singer. This book seems great for all ages, but I would probably consider it more for upper elementary students or advanced lower grade students.

Dear Tabby is a great satire off of the famous Dear Abby advice column in newspapers and magazines. With its animal characters, it is rich in literary devices like pun and metaphor, which would allow teachers to implement these devices in their lesson plans. This aids in both vocabulary and comprehension instruction. This book also has a lot of alliteration, which would help with phonemic awareness. Furthermore, with the letter format, I think a strong writing lesson could be connected to the book. I think this book would be best for an older elementary school student.

Separate Is Never Equal is a great informational text about the court case that allowed for integration of Hispanic students in California schools. I thought this book was strong for teaching vocabulary, as it has a lot of words that would pertain to that moment in history, as well as to government and court cases. I also think that having that informative text in a narrative format allows for a better transition from narrative texts to informational texts. I think the best group for this book would be upper elementary, more so because of content than because of difficulty.

This book is not only beautiful in its illustrations, but in the metaphorical and poetic language it contains. This book is great for its presentation of cultural diversity and a unique family dynamic. However, the vocabulary of the text also allows for a literary instruction opportunity. I also think the way the author describes each scene could be used wonderfully to teach about descriptive writing. I think this book could be suitable for any group, but may resonate more with students who grew up in a similar environment to the main character CJ.

Those Shoes is a good book for children to distinguish between their wants and their needs, as well as between the wants and needs of those others around them. This book would be great for teaching comprehension. While other books work towards comprehension education as well, I think the combination of clues from the pictures and the actual text would both help students understand the text better and challenge them to understand the things that go unstated. I think this book would be good for a younger group of students who need work on comprehension, but could also be used for an older group of students as well.

Yo! Yes? is a simple story about two boys from different backgrounds becoming friends. With its amazing simplicity, it teaches written expression on a word level, allowing students to delve deeper into their phonemic awareness skills. The book also offers a great opportunity for fluency. The book is only dialogue and therefore is easily manipulated into a readers' theatre exercise. I would use this book in a classroom of young readers or readers in the early stages of literacy who would need intervention at the phonemic level.

This book is an informational text telling the amazing true story of the four black women who sent Americans to the moon. As an informational text, it has a lot to offer in teaching content knowledge. However, there is also a great opportunity to learn new vocabulary words in the context of a great story that is rarely discussed in typical American history courses. There are also a few sections of repeated phrases, particularly highlighting what the women were not allowed to do and what they were capable of. This would improve fluency in readers. I think this book would be great for a more advanced reader, especially one with an interest in space or powerful women in history.

This wordless picture book about the one child policy in China seems like an odd choice for a reading education course, but this book could be a valuable tool for reading teachers. Depending on the activity teachers choose to pair with this book, it could work with any age student in any step of their learning process. For early stage literacy learners, the book could help students learn about text features, like moving left to right and top to bottom. For later readers, the book could be used to prompt important comprehension skills like inference, prediction, and asking questions. The book could also serve as a strong backbone off which to build a creative writing center in the classroom.

This book of nature poems side by side in English and Spanish is beautiful in both its language and its illustrations. Poetry as a whole is a good way to teach fluency. Students build rhythm as they read poetry, creating a more natural prosody in their read alouds. The side-by-side translations into Spanish could also help emergent English speakers who are already fluent in Spanish. Furthermore, the text structure of a poem is important to learn, and these poems have a variety of different structures to them. I think this book would be great for an early reader who may be struggling with developing a natural sounding fluency

Press Here reads like the instructions to a game, dance, or scavenger hunt. However, within its pages, teachers can find an easy way to assess comprehension. Students are motivated to read with fluency and comprehension to follow the directions on the page, and teachers can watch their students read and see what words or concepts they struggle with the most. For a younger age group, this would be a good way to practice decoding, fluency, and comprehension at the place where they intersect.

Brewster is a young black student being integrated into Central, the white school. The book contains a lot of opportunities for phonemic awareness, like the various onomatopoeias spread throughout the book. This book exposes readers to a group of high level vocabulary words, especially adjectives. There is a repetition of some key phrases throughout the book as well, adding fluency to the list of literary skills learned in this book.
