The ego is an individuals sense of self, their personal identity and how they percieve reality. Everyone has an ego as every individual is an ego. Do we learn, think, feel, or love the same as the next person ? That question in itself is an ego because we need to be conscious thinking subjects if we were to answer it. Our ego develops as we interect with the world around us. The ego knows that impulsiveness can lead to hardships in the long run but still it correlates with meeting the needs of id, while still taking into consideration the reality of the situation. The ego strives to protect a mental image, it’s harsh and aims for perfection. It structures ones’ personality by prohibiting us from certain drives and punishes misbehavior with feelings of guilt.
