We will practice reading the time on an analog clock. The short hand shows the hours, and the long hand shows the minutes.

Parts of the Clock

Understand the different parts of an analog clock: hour hand, minute hand, and sometimes a second hand. This knowledge is essential for telling time accurately.

Hour Hand:
This is the shorter "hand" on the clock.
It moves slowly and rotates around the clock completely every 12 hours.
It points to the current hour.
The number that it points to is the number we say when we tell time. For example: if the hour hand is pointed at the six we would say 6:....
Minute Hand:
This is the longer hand on the clock.
It moves more quickly than the hour hand, it rotates around the clock completely every 60 minutes (one hour).
Each number it points to represents 5 minutes.
We will practice this!
Second Hand
Tells us the number of seconds until the next minute.

Telling Time to the Hour

Learn how to tell time to the nearest hour. For example, when the short hand points to 3 and the long hand points to 12, it is 3 o'clock.

Telling Time to the Half Hour

We are going to practice telling time using the 9 clocks that we have here. We will look at the clocks one at a time, so no looking ahead! :)

I am going to show you a time on the clock. When you are ready and think you know the answer show me a thumbs up.

Once we have all had time to look at the time and determine the answer we will review.

Remember: the short hand tells us the hour and we say the number we see. The long hand tells us the minutes and we count by fives!

Whiteboard and Marker Clock Activity

Now, that we have had practice reading the time on the clock, we are going to practice making the time on the clock to reflect the time I tell you. I am going to hand out a whiteboard and markers for this part of the exercise.

We will follow the same format as before.

First, I will show you the time.

Then, you will write down you answer and show me a thumbs up to indicate that you are ready.

We will then review the answers.

We will go into more detail about the various ways students were able to determine the answer.

We will check for understanding.

Then, we will try something a bit more complicated! :)

It is important that we understand when the minute hand points to the 15 that represents 15 minutes. When the minute hand points to the 9 it represents 45 minutes or a "quarter till".
