Show pride in your Narrative! by Kristen Lawler

What part of your narrative are you most proud of? Go back into the piece you submitted and provide a direct quote from your essay. This should be a portion you are particularly excited about. This could be a single line or a paragraph. Consider your word choice, dialogue, imagery, conflict -- whatever speaks to you. **Do NOT unsubmit you essay**

Feel free to comment on others' writing; it's great to see the progress you've made!

The next day Charlotte got in the car somewhat ready to go to the doctor’s. As she opened the car door, her hand froze. Her toes were numb and she could see her breath. She heard her Mom behind her crunching in the snow. She zipped up her jacket even more and popped in the car. The whole way there she left her hat on, her ears were bright red and cold. Butterflies were in her stomach and she felt as if they were eating her away to disappear in the world.

"You're late," snapped a snobbish voice from the front of the classroom. It was dark, with lots of black. Detention was going to be fun, Spencer could tell.

"I know," said Spencer cheerfully.

Mrs. Opauler rolled her sharp eyes. Her face was like an owl's; round and pinched at the mouth - sorry, beak.

"What's your excuse this time, Korthe?" Mrs. Opauler said, halfway between a groan and a sigh.

"Well, it's a big school, you know. 53 staircases and even more hallways, and your dungeon of a classroom is on the fifth floor," Spencer shrugged.

"You live on the fourth floor." Mrs. Opauler pointed out.

"It's a big staircase." Spencer said. This was true; a bigger staircase would be very hard to find.

Spencer suppressed a snort as Mrs. Opauler scowled - it just looked wrong on her owlish face. She plopped down at a desk in the back of the classroom and put her feet up, black flats gleaming in the dim light. She much preferred her old, beat-up sneakers, but they really didn't go with her outfit. Spruce Academy had uniforms, and most of the students wore them. Spencer was one of the exceptions. She usually just wore a black sweater that fell off her shoulder, paired with a green skirt. The uniform was a black top and a green bottom anyway, and no one protested.

She looked at the lined paper on her desk, and then looked up at the board. There was a single sentence written on it: I will not be a hindrance to my students or my teachers.

"You'd better get started on your lines, if you want to be finished by midnight."
